Who or what is Gary?

That's likely because they had contact with people from Vault 101 back when it was still open, knowing about the existence of something however doesn't mean they ever got the chance to get the tools/knowledge needed to open it.

There certainly aren't any in any vaults we get to see in Fo3 for them to mess with.

Wouldn't it be funny if there was more about the Gary's in the next Fallout game?

Say we could have Gary as a follower ?

I think I'd laugh the entire time because the whole Gary subject has been kind of comical as of how they act in repeating their name constantly and talking in 3rd person.

I gotta admit, it would be interesting if one somehow came across cloning tech and with a high enough science skill created a clone follower. Not necessarily "Gary". Say, if your science skill low, the clone acts like a Gary. Just says "Bob" or whatever.

But jf high skill, the clone is more articulate. Similar to how Skynet was handled in FO2.

Gary aren't the only occurence. I believe that here one or two other vaults in which people are still alive 200 years later without explanations. That and Little Lamplight.

It is not about Gary, but a flaw in the thinking process...

Sometime scientific breakthroughs happen by accident.

This is true.

Ever wonder if they had already successfully made a Gary that served a purpose and was so successful that they tried to make more and they were just repeated failures instead because they couldn't copy the original achieved Gary clone?

Sometimes they can't copy something that was successful for reasons unknown. Perhaps Gary was a government project, that was going on secretly in that vault that obviously went horribly wrong.

I have my money on a private group of scientists, whatever. We will never know I fear.

It may come up. Perhaps the scientists were from the Institute...

Actually that would even make sense. With the institute (possibly) caring so much to make mankind immortal (lifelike androids could very well be a step toward a perfect body - just needs a human mind to fill the husk previously occupied by an artificial brain), cloning would have been an obvious yet abandoned way to reach that goal.

This is also why I think they would have done the M17 cryosleep Vault I proposed in the suggestions thread. It would have been done in favor of the (now converted) M16 Vault, its original goal was to experiment on robot technology - they prefered to continue with that research in MIT though. M16 tested sunglasses in an environment without natural sunlight instead.
