Why are companions so shallow compared to New Vegas?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 11:17 am

Companions in this game have very little depth or story behind them whereas in New Vegas they went into great detail with the characters you were able to let tag along you. I really would love to know why they chose to go this route.

It's because The Elder Scrolls series always keeps its focus primarily on YOU as a character. This ain't no ensemble show.

The Fallout series has a different approach.

I like it this way better. More companions is better than a very small group of companions.

I was about to ask if companions have branching quests/stories behind them, would enjoy something like that as in New Vegas. So they are really just nothing more than extra muscle? That's a shame....

Wasn't New Vegas developed by Obsidian?

I like we have lots of companion options, but, I would not be adverse to them having more dialogue, or special stories/quests.

The best comment from a Companion I have heard is from Cosnach. When you heal him, he complains that you have gotten rid of his ale breath.

New vegas wasn't made by Bethesda, it was made by obsidian. That's why they feel so different.

Because they were added only so that people wouldn't constantly ask for them. TES has been "Lone Wanderer" style focused ever since TES1 where they concluded that the game works better when you are alone.

Also, New Vegas was done by Obsidian, not Bethesda, And Obsidian is used on making RPG's where companions are important (I still played NV without them because they annoy me in TES styled games)

Fixed.

I also like it better the TES way. You get far more companions to choose from, and they honestly still have plenty of story behind them. (Some more than others) I'm amazed at how many I have found throughout the world so far. They really did a great job with this.

I had emotional attachment issues to the New Vegas companions, I could never decide who to take and I insisted on having the best ending for all of them. I read all of the possible endings online and cried for some of Boone's sad yet badass endings.
Probably better off with these shallow companions.

I would have liked to see a couple of more deeply developed companions. That one elf mage at least has an interesting companion quest. On the upside though, the quantity of potential followers is great, and the lack of dialog is at least fitting for most of them - your housecarl lackey probably should just stand quietly in the background and lug around those half dozen dragon scales you haven't had a chance to stash yet.

Not when you've killed half the companions in the game on accident with rogue fireballs :(

I wish there was a follower that had a mobile enchanters table however, that would be nice.

Why don't you ask on Obsidian forums cause Bethesda didn't make New Vegas.

New Vegas was essentially Fallout 3.5 (although an amazing game, I don't mean that in a bad, its-only-an-expansion way) which was a Bethesda game. Obsidian took Bethesda's game and expanded on it, and I think a bit of comparing to it is not a problem.

There were some excellent companion mods for Morrowind and Oblivion (and one for New Vegas, although NV didn't really need it so badly). Here's hoping there will be similar awesomeness in Skyrim.

Not really.

It was more like "Let's see what Obsidian can do with the Fallout 3 engine."

And that's what we got - Obsidian's better at the complex web of interrelated quests & factions, but not as good at world design. Beth is better at world design, less so at quests & characters.

So Obisidian's Fallout game is more linear, pretty poor from a "let's just explore the world to find neat stuff" standpoint, and has fancier writing & quests. It's not really like a Beth game at all.

In a game like Arcanum, there were at least 30 followers, and you still get at least 6 character that was developed to some degree.

I like that I have more companions to choose from, but they could have developed a few followers like Lydia with a story quest in a some random dungeon. It wouldn't have been all that hard.

Obsidian should make a new fantasy game for Bethesda. I love the companion story and quests. New Vegas was 5x more fun than FO3 for me.

Indeed NPCs are too shallow, especially companions. Many quests are less well thought out than New Vegas too. I hope they'll add DLC companions with real backgrounds and pvssyr.

Mods will surely give us some great companions but right now if I want to know more about Lydia or Aela or whatever, I'm [censored]. They always reuse the same lines.

You should also add that Feargus Urqua* Urqote?....h yeah, Urquhart was heavilly influenced by JRPGs whereas Todd Howard...Ain't. Though, personally, I do loves me some JRPGs (I started out gaming with them!) 'Opera scene in FF3 anyone?(6, domestically in Japan) I would absolutely love life if Todd, and Feagus colaborated on their next title! (A new game not Tes/Baldurs)
