Why are so many items free to pick up in towns?

Hey all. First and foremost, Terrific game IMO.

I was just wondering if anyone else finds it odd how so many items can just me picked up in towns without the townsfolk getting angry? I am really confused as to why some items are labeled red and others are not.

For instance, like picking up a weapons, foods, misc items and so on which are RIGHT next to a merchant, then having the option to resell those items directly to the merchant and turn profit? Is this intentional or is it a bug?

It appears that virtually every item which can be found inside barrels can be resold to merchants. And more often that not, the NPC's do not care if you take whatever items that are on display and resell it to them.

It doesn't break the game by any means, but it just seems rather ...odd?

For roleplaying purposes, I do my best to ignore all free items inside of towns, villages, farms. Unless the items are gifts or rewards. I try to just get whatever money I can from dungeons and the wilderness.

Kind regards,

Dargar.
