Apparently you do not need to be married, have not tried it yet though, my first character was married already. Are the children available for adoption?

Married

You should get a note, or just be able to adopt

Non-Married

You should be able to Adopt.

You do not have to be married to adopt. I adopted the little girl in Whiterun and all I needed to do was to build her a dresser and bed in my house (though, admittedly, it didn't take the first time I did this. Once I reloaded, it worked fine.).

When the children say "chest", they really mean "dresser".

This is a known bug, this happens when you try to adopt a child before having room to adopt one apparantly...

I just purchased Breezehome and I had the option to buy children room for [..] gold. It was in fact 250 gold. But the laboratory was still there so I cannot adopt a child since the conversation ends in "do you have a house for me? no" . I heard Hearthfire fixes the alchemy lab bug but it didn't in my case, even after I disabled the unofficial dawnguard patch that claims to fix it too. So I had to use console commands to have the laboratory then change it to the children room. Buing first the children room didn't work either. So is there a console id for the children room as well? I don't want to focus on that child adoption but it presented itself and I want to continue play a bug free game.

Is the Alchemy lab room empty? or furnished? If it is empty try to disable dawnguard first to make the purchase. (I didn't install the unoffical patch, I simply disable dawnguard first to purchase the alchemy lab than enable dawnguard again.)

I have the alchemy lab but no way to transform to a child's room or even buy a child's room in the first place. In wiki it says child's room costs 500 gold. I have to pay only 250 to change but in fact it doesn't do anything. I had the conversation with the child before bying the house so it may be a problem. I became Thane and bought the house, decorated it with lab and changed to child's room but still the conversation with the child is the same as if I didn't have a house and in fact I don't have the chidl's room even if i paid for transforming the alchemy lab. I unistalled the unofficial patch but same problem. I should have waited to buy this dlc that the many bugs mentioned in the wiki were fixed :(.

How can you adopt children from other areas besides Riften? Riften is the only option I seem to have and I noticed there are a lot more kids running around the other holds.

Talk to them. You should get the option if they’re adoptable.

I disabled the few mods I had ( UFO, unofficial patches for skyrim and dawnguard) and it works now. So one of these mods is causing the problems. Since I disabled previously the dawnguard unofficial patch and it didn't work, I guess it's maybe UFO which changes something in Breezehome (command field book) . I don't know maybe it's another thing, For now I'll continue without mods...

Two ways to get furniture: buy for a vanilla house, make for a Hearthfire one.
8 adoptable kids. 4 at Honorhall, but you are forced to do the DB questline to adopt them. The other 4, you're not.
Other 4 are -
Lucia - streets of Whiterun.
Sofie - Gray Qtr, Windhelm.
Blaise - Katla's Farm, Solitude
One other boy - Dawnstar.

One other boy - Dawnstar.

Oh poor little mite, even his name is forgotten in the mists of time.
I am adopting him for sure! Someone will know and remember his name.

For some bizarre reason I now have a mental image of loads of hardcoe gamers in front of their multi-monitor displays, water-cooled gaming rig with eye-watering spec, wearing Dovahkiin Viking-style helmets on their heads, sitting weighing the pros and cons of adopting the girl from Whiterun vs. the boy from Dawnstar, and should they give their new child a green tunic/dress or a yellow one? And which plants to put in the garden? And this is why I love gaming :)

No, I'm on the list of NON-parents, at least until those booger-brai... I mean Bethesda programmers get the PS3 version out.

Far as the kids go, I think Lucia's story is saddest. She has evil relatives.

Yes, I'm STILL wearing the helmet. Even got the horns pointing down.

That is strange because I can convert the alchemy lab into child room.

I guess the difference is that you purchased the lab with unoffical patch, while I made purchase by disable dawnguard at first place.

I do find new bug my skyrim ctd after title if I have dawnguard disabled while hearthfire is active.
