Why can't I carry objects like in TES IV?

In TES IV you could press the left bumper and carry objects and throw them. I think it has been removed from Skyrim, is this true and can anyone tell me why?

You have to hold down the "activate" button (A on 360, not sure about anything else) and then you have to press it again to drop it.

Press and hold "activate" while aiming towards whatever item you're trying to pick up. Once the item is grabbed, you wont' have to hold activate anymore, it'll just stay "grabbed" until you press activate again, then it will fall.

A single click on activate (without holding) will just put the item in your inventory.
