Why Can't Consoles Access the Console?

Post » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:03 pm

I've been wondering why you can't access the console on game consoles (PS3, XBox360, etc.). It frustrates me so much, I, just like some PC gamers, would like a couple minutes of godmode and noclip every once in a while. They can simply disable achievements and trophies when you have a con command in effect(and maybe block some missions/quests). It would make sandbox games like GTA IV and Just Cause 2 sooo much more fun! So can someone tell me why they can't allow us console gamers to access the console? Also, give your opinion on why/why not you want consoles on consoles, if understood that.

Because "console" is used in development state to help people to debug the game. That is something what you don't do with consoles since you don't make games with them.

Because the console is mostly aimed for use by the developers during testing. In the case of Bethesda and the TES games, It's also useful for modders of course.

For the consoles, not so much. You'd need a keyboard to enter the commands, unless they specifically design some kind of button combination that triggers a few specific console commands like god mode and no clip, or add some sort of keyboard interface. And then they'd also have to worry about achievement/trophy stuff as well, so they're probably thinking that getting 'the console' on the consoles is too much hassle for too little gain.

GTA 4 could definite have benefitted from some kind of cheat option though, just for random chaos. Maybe through the cell phone. The game was way too serious. Pedestrian riot and reckless driver cheats were the most entertaining ones in San Andreas, GTA 4 had nothing.

I remember that True Crime: New York City for the PS2. It had commands but they were very buggy. The game would occasionally crash whenever you accessed the console.

I know it had some good old classic cheat codes. Never used them myself (I don't need help causing havoc B) )

Indeed, I really wish I could do stuff like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Drp9o4E7G7U on the 360 version of GTA4. :sadvaultboy:

(granted, that was done by editing the .dat files rather than console commands, but you get my point)

I'm fairly certain that Two Worlds II lets you use some type of console command on the 360. It disables all achievements and lets you do certain things.

I haven't tried it because what I'm waiting for is a patch so I don't have to disable the achievements. I'm pretty upset because they haven't released anything on the 360 but PC already has been patched.. :(

EDIT: Typo

As has been said, the console in most games is not for "cheat codes." It's for developers and testers (and therefore modders) to use to test things they've created.

hrm... that makes me wonder, could you plug a USB mouse and keyboard into an Xbox 360 and play with those? I heard you can plug a 360 controller into a PC and play your games that way so I'm wondering if I can do it that way, since I find it much easier to play with a mouse and keyboard than a controller.

The games really arent made for keyboard/mouse. (Besides Final Fantasy XI which they allowed the keyboard to work).

Yes but most games I play are made for PC as well, so I don't see why the 360 version of a PC game couldn't work with a mouse/keyboard.

Yes of course there are ways, but they are all illegal, unless you work for the companies and did it by their biddings. Discussing further voilates forums rules.

Those arguments above are easy to refute, why? Two Worlds Two, which is multi-console, has the console on EVERY SINGLE platform! I don't think that anyone can refute this.

Just because it can be done doesn't mean it makes financial sense to do so.

Trophies/Achievements would have to be removed from a game with console command to begin with.

I hope you're being sarcastic :/
Although I don't think there was a Riot mode which was by far one of the most entertaining things in SA. Flying cars was fun too.
