Why can't I recruit followers into the DG?

Post » Tue Nov 20, 2012 10:31 pm

I just thought it would be cool if, like the Blades, you could recruit followers into the Dawnguard. I think it'd be cool, and I don't see why they shouldn't of added this.

EDIT: Considering this is now in spoilers, I had an awesome idea. On the final assault to Castle Volkihar, you could choose maybe 3 followers-turned-Dawnguard to go with you as well as Isran, Gunmar, Sorine and Florentius. That'd be a nice touch, going to war against some of the most powerful vampires with your friends at your side. ^-^

Why, so they can all turn on me like Isran did? Screw that. Here they are, asking me to be some damn Dawnguard, send me into a quest, alone, and then wonder why I come back to the castle with red eyes.

I couldn't kill Isran, apparently. He's hostile but can't be killed.

Yeah, someone really glitched the hell out of this story line. No "We're sorry, Dragonborn, for sending you to meet a swarm of vampires, but we really didn't think you'd get bitten." *snickers*

There should also be a chance to recruit followers into The Dark-brother hood/Companions depending on their personality. For example:Erik might join the Companions but would never join the Dark brother hood/Thieves Guild unless you persuaded him to.Or Jenassa might join the Dark-brotherhood but wouldn't join the College of Winterhold.Really there should be a option to recruit followers into every fraction.

Because Isran told your followers that Dawnguards shouldn't sleep, because "sleep is for the weak" (or something to that effect). Your followers, the sensible souls that they are, value sleep too much.

Honestly though, the whole Isran character seems to be a male version of Delphine, where everything is black and white to the point of extremism. I really wish the script writers would put more effort into character development.

I don't understand Isran. He spends a lot of his time sleeping, and yet encourages me not too.

Isran is almost as bad as Delphine, but at the conclusion of the Dawnguard side of the quest his conversation with Serana increased his stock in my eyes tremendously, and I'm more than happy to continue working with the Dawnguard (especially as Castle Volkihar's residents seem quite underwhelming considering that I'm supposed to be the lord of the castle now). Delphine would have insisted that you run your sword through Serana on the spot while her father's ashes are still smoldering, and will refuse to "help" you anymore unless you do so.

The way Isran took Agmaer under his wing ("'my.. pa's .. axe'?... Stendarr help us...") made me like him from the start. He also eventually came down from his high horse when he realised that the Vigilants were all dead and that he needn't be so cocky - he's not as bad as his exterior will suggest. He only turns on you if you willingly accepted Harkon's "gift" (even if you subsequently cure it, because you're working "with" Harkon) - if you accepted it from Serana out of necessity (even though there was technically another less attractive option) he tells you to go see Falion, but doesn't attack you. The rest of the Dawnguard seem genuinely concerned for your health if Isran saw you in that state, though. :)

Dawnguard doesn't have the so called empire turning them over to their immediate deaths. I think it's fair for blades to be rather suspicious given the circumstances they are in.

Isram does lock you up in the castle entry area to make sure you are not a vamp with the follwers you recruit as well.

I must've been asleep (haha) when that happened - all I remember was him telling me I should go check out Dimhollow when we first met...

I do take Charsuipao's point re Isran being a bit better towards Serana after you finished the main Dawnguard quest, but one thing bugs me - instead of just killing all the vampires, why not try to change their minds (especially those who were turned against their will) and get cured? After all, if Serana can be persuaded to be cured, there should be hope for the non-pureblood (Harry Potter, anyone?) vamps. That should've been a radiant quest - persuade vampires to be cured and then join Dawnguard!

I thought there were enough people in and around Fort Dawnguard to not warrant me recruiting another three npc's from the world. Anyways, I like seeing my followers out and around the spaces where they are found in. Mercenaries in the inns and such.

Well, they are not actual followers but merchants and quest givers.

I couldn't agree with you more. Skyrim is a fantastic game except for the writing and character development. And this brings up the whole dumbing down of RPGs in general and why they do it. But that's a whole other subject. :)

To be honest, Isran is as much a fanatic as Harkon or Delphine is.
Such groups become doomed in long haul if focussed in the direction of a fanatic.

Unlike the Vampire Clan Volkihar, you do not have the option to replace Isran in the Dawnguard.
With the Player as a leader, the fanatics in the group could be leashed, or removed.
