Why can't you laycrawl in a prone position?

Post » Sun Sep 02, 2012 8:20 pm

I started to replay Skyrim as a thief and in sneaking around caves I started thinking. I remember how fun it was to explore in MW using levitation to find hidden nooks in caves or even passages to other areas. I get that they took out levitation for whatever reason, but why not add a prone sneak position. It could allow you to crawl through small openings, tunnels, etc. that would add to the exploration experience. I would love to notice a hole I had never seen before (that also didn't show up on maps) and discover a network of tunnels leading to ??? A prone position could also add to stealth play style by letting you hide behind obstructions like tall grass or at least add a sneak bonus.

Go back to cod!

Jk I would like a prone feature too. Would make sneaking around certain people easier. I doubt beth would do it but I like the idea.

Yes COD is probably where I got the idea, but I want it more for exploration then for stealth. IDK I keep walking over to openings in walls thinking maybe this leads somewhere, but it never does. I miss surprises.

I'd really like to see this in TES VI. I doubt it'd be put into Skyrim though.

It's an acceptable and reasonable idea, but as you know, rpg's don't usually, if at all, implement the "prone/crawl" feature. Even in the vast history of TES modding there hasn't been, as far as I know, a prone mod. If people were to whine about it(not referring to you), like with mount combat, Beth probably would have done it.

Skyrim seems to do a lot of nontraditional RPG things so I don't think it would be too much of a stretch. I'd be happier if they brought back levitation and passages high up in caves but they scrapped it. My guess is it had something to do with city walls and glitches... idk. I think crawling or even climbing could make caves much more interesting to explore, but I don't think they will implement it.

That's the problem with the RPG genre, perhaps video games in general. 'Nobody has done it before, so we shouldn't do it either.'

(this is a generalization, of course, but you get the point)

Yes, of course. That's a defect that big game companies are suffering of. Like Hollywood, they are playing it "safe" because if they experiment, then they're putting their money bags in trouble. Only the indie companies are free somewhat from this attitude.

*sneak attack x15! Critical Hit to Knee!*
on a more serious note.... it would be quite fun to be able to crawl, cant count the number of times i've seen a small opening that i though "i wish i could go in there"

I'm for anything that adds content although I don't see how this idea would be much use. You can't fire a bow or skit someone's throat while prone. You also make a lot more noise. As for exploration, maybe but they really need to decide if they're going to want exploration back or if we're going to have bi bright dungeons with quest markers and candles that never go out. The draugr have glowing eyes. It could have been awesome.

I wouldnt mind not having prone if there were those secret tunnels you talked about. I think the "crouch" when you're sneaking can be used, feels kinda weird to have two crouch actions. Although on the topic of secret tunnels, there are some fairly secret holes that lead to falmer dungeons though  I got a nice little adventure with that. I thought the hole was just a hole at first.

I agree with the above post; there's not much use for prone position in ancient times i suppose  can't fire arrow, weird position to shoot spells. All you'd get are probably slashes to the knee.

True. But sniping with a crossbow is another story. Being prone makes you more accurate and harder to see.

Now that's an interesting request. They should try to program that into the next game.

Nah, crouch is good enough. Besides the only possible attack while prone would magic, and you could not move while using it.

Perhaps a slash at an enemy's legs with a dagger could work, or an unarmed attack?
Besides, it's not a purely combat-oriented mechanic. It could be used to hide from your enemies, crawl under traps enter difficult-to-reach areas.

ooh unarmed attack while prone pull enemies feet out from under them. or blade in one hand other hand empty pull enemy to the ground and stab them. could be pretty fun actually having ways to fight while prone.
