Why cant we hot key the dpad more?

Post » Tue Jan 22, 2013 12:43 pm

In oblivion we had what 8? now we have two(sorta three)?

EDIT: I don't know how people came to the conclusion that this means I don't like the favorites menu.

LOL

No it's not.

You get far more "Hot Keyed" items in the quick access Favorites menu that you bring up by hitting the "Up" arrow than you ever could with an actual "Hotkeyed" directional pad. And the list isn't any more difficult to navigate unless you've got over 15 items Favorited.

This Favorites menu is a much better option IMO.

But no, the console user is not suffering at all.

I find the very idea hilarious.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they implemented it like this. They could have used up-dpad for the quick menu and the 7 other slots for gear/weapons. Not really an issue for me since they added in the kinect commands as you can favorite a ton of items and equip them with voice commands.

Consoles users suffering? In terms of an Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim is the best one yet for consoles. Heck, the UI is blatantly designed for an Xbox 360 game-pad.

The reason time stops is because the Favorites menu is the same as performing an instant action. It still takes you time to draw a new weapon. It takes a second or two to equip a new spell. But the decision to do so (i.e. navigating the Favorites menu) happens at the speed of thought, therefore the whole "time stop" effect is in place.

I like this way much better. With Oblivion I was always stumbling on the D pad.

I hate stopping battle to draw a new weapon. It's completely busts the immersion to stop time when a Draugr is rushing at you to pull your sword. Worse, I can't figure out how to use the hotkeys we do have LOL.

Are you serious? It's an absolute chore playing as a mage on the 360. I'm playing one now as a matter of fact - and that is immediately after I had played an archer.

Playing an archer with Bow on 1, crossbow on 2 and equipping a sword and shield meant hardly ever having to pause the game at all. Playing a mage means having to use more than three set-ups so it's stop-start-stop-start. There's absolutely no fluency at all.

I'm not even sure you know what you are talking about. Have you ever used the d-pad while playing both a mage and a warrior? If you can't see there's a massive discrepancy in the quality of the combat between the two, then I don't know why you're posting in this topic.

Im not saying it shouldn't stop time. Im saying that the game would be more fluid if i could simply hit a button ONCE and use the spell. I know it sounds lazy, but going throught the favorites to equip every spell breaks immersion.

I like the favorites menu. You can load up as many favorites you want and I find that pretty nice seeing as how I switch through alot of weapons and equipment.

I think there is an overall flaw in the hotkey system in any case, regardless of platform anyone uses.

Excepting script extended mods, keyboard users are still limited to 8 hotkeys, when, for example, a Nostromo gamepad user has over 216 possible keystrokes available...but the base game does not provide the ability to allocate keys to hotkey, nor to extend it out from the 8 basic presets.

The UI in general is awful... 3 buttons to access 3 different menus (quest log/settings, item/map/magic/level, and resting)? thats just stupid, it should be 1.

As for the fav menu and dpad, yeah I was not a fan of it either since it makes playing as mage annoying. they should have simply made up on the dpad the only button to access the fav menu and the rest hot keys (that equip whatever to a specific hand).

Hey...it ain't fun going to hit the hotkeyed 'potion of ultimate restore health' and accidentally hitting the jump button when you are next to a cliff...or worse, going to hit the jump button when you are running down the steps from Dragonsreach, and instead of making a dramatic entry into the markeplace you suddenly transform into the wolfman of whiterun...

Nah, the d-pad is much better because once you get the hang of it you will always get in the general area of the spell or weapon you want and eventually you can switch between items very quickly. The favorite menu doesn't help much by the fact that when you open it up, you have to scroll up or down to get from one item to the next. Seriously, try playing a mage with the favorite menu. It's pretty annoying having to stop the game every few seconds to switch between different spells and eventually you just stick to one spell for a while because you don't want to go through the headache.

So what do you put on your 8 hotkeys, and what do you put on your d-pad hotkeys? (All platforms)

I actually preferred the d-pad hot key over the current menu format. I agree that the constant use of the menu inhibits the flow of the game quite substantially. Which especially affect magic users via their constant need to switch spells. The flow of magic in combat needs to improve dramatically it is too stop and go.
