Why Classes?

Post » Thu Oct 31, 2013 10:58 am

I am probably in the minority here, but I actually was really disappointed ESO would use a class system. I do understand why it was put in place, it makes everyone feel like they have a "role" within the world, but it just seems less fun to me. I would have loved to stick with one character and just travel the world doing everything. I am both a completionest and a min-maxer, which means I will most likely be disappointed at some point with my main character (Talk about first world problems, right?) and I just don't have the time in my day to day life to focus on more than one character. Just throwing my opinion out there. Anyone else feel that classes, I won't say hurt the game, but disappointed them?

There's classes because every other MMO out there has classes. If you're like the rest you're guaranteed a certain level of success. It's about the monies friend, sadly.

Not at all. I think doing everything with one character ruins the experience and nullifies the uniqueness of a given character.

They're more templates for play styles rather than locked classes. Almost everything is available to every class, so the "class" names are just a jumping off point for you to create the character you want. Though I suppose to hardcoe extreme min maxers it will make a somewhat slight difference in the number crunching.

And I can see that side too. I just fall under the category of people who will most likely do every single quest, or get every single skill, or get the top tier gear, but I like to have all those options open.

Your chosen class in Eso only restricts you from nine Skill lines total all weapons and armor types can be used by all four classes, so it's not like it's very restrictive in the grand scheme of things, besides it's not like classes are a foreign concept to Elder Scrolls either.

No. I everyone can do everything why would you need to group? If I am exactly the same as the other 1 million players how is my character unique?

If I can make a cloth armor wearing 2 hand swor wielding tank with the given skill lines why not? Given the class skills add some utility other lines (weapon ect) don't this allows for greater diversification as well as reply value for alts.

Why bother going though te story for the other alliances if the gameplay will be exactly the same?

Classes as most know are not a part of the games. The ESO Classes can be played like anything you want. You can play a Mage-like Dragonknight For example.

They have said it is just a starting point, but I don't fully believe that. If it was just a starting point then why not make the other class skills unlockable at some point? Even if it wasn't until level 50+, I just like the option

Isn't it 12 skill lines? Not to mention each skill can be morphed.

Ok but here is the thing- the main argument I see against the class-free system is that then every character will be the exact same, but in reality they wouldn't, because I also see people saying that they are just a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the skills you will get. So which is it?

This isn't your typical "I can use all the abilities" MMO. Even if we had access to every skill in the game we could still only use 5 of them at a time. You would still have tanks, healers, and dps. You would still have tons of unique builds. If these 12 skill lines are enough to completely diversify the classes from each other then Zenimax has lied to us, as they claimed classes were just a starting point, that you could branch out and do whatever you want. I don't think they lied to us, I think you really can just go be whatever you want to, but then that makes this class system somewhat of a relic of the past. I feel like it gets stuck in this weird in between space, where they didn't know quite how far they wanted to take their idea of player freedom.

You know, I did find it weird that this game has classes. Because they are always acting like the classes are an inconvenience. "Yeah, we have classes... but that won't matter because you can do whatever you want anyway!"

It might be a pvp/balance issue, so you don't have a bunch of near-invincible battlemages going up against each other with max stats and every ability at their disposal, and taking forever for people to die.

While I do like to fully max out my characters in the offline games, I don't actually use most of the abilities, as they're just a means to an end to reaching max level. I'm sure that in ESO, I'll be perfectly content with my sword+shield/archer Templar.

I totally agree that the classes are more important than the devs often portray. Those 12 lines have some incredible abilities in them. If I could, I'd swap in Storm Calling for Aedric Spear in a heartbeat. My Templar would be materially stronger for it. But I'd also have a lot less need for Sorcerers to cover my butt.

I absolutely feel your pain, I want to make my character the best he can be. But I enjoy working as a team more.
