Why Combat svcks in TES

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:39 am

It's just numbers people. When you swing a sword in-game (which gets repetitive after about 5 swings) it doesn't even remotely feel like your swinging a weapon. It feels like your "swinging" a number, a simple damage stat, because there's no feel of impact, every strike passes through all kinds of armor. And since Oblivion, there isn't even the option to thrust, chop or slash (though I don't know the difference between these two).

So, tell me, do you like combat in TES or not? Why/ Why not?

The Elder Scrolls games are not combat simulators. They are roleplaying games.

A majority of the game's actual content however, revolves around combat in some form.

The Elder Scrolls games are not combat simulators.
That's why. And I hope they fix that.

They are roleplaying games.
I hope they fix that too.

Though aren't you 99 times out of 100 roleplaying someone who is good at combat?

Needs more turn based combat. This hack and slash garbage is dumbing down my RPGs!

Just kind of struck me as to why I couldn't get into Skyrim so very much. Though it is kind of far afield of what you were saying re123. They were obviously(to me) trying to be a combat game and a role playing game and an immersive world game and an dungeon delving game and an open world game and an FPS and 3rd person game and an adventure game and and and....forgive the ands...

Huh...my respect for the devs increased a bit. Though I still dislike their design decisions for some things to some degree. But I cannot fault them for time constraints, which is probably responsible for most of the things i disliked about the game. They were trying to do too much in too short a time to do it right. Umm...well that is my opinion anyways. Feel free to disagree.

Hey man, :stare: Might and Magic 6 and 7 were great turn based RPG open world games. They were very fun too!

Combat svcks as compared to what? TES has (imho) the best combat of any RPG I've ever played. Granted, it seems to be getting more and more dumbed down with the subsequent additions to the series, but from Daggerfall to Skyrim (I only left out Arena because I haven't played it), there's still more to combat than any other RPG that I know of on the market. And if it's RPG comabt you have something against, I would syggest not playing RPGs.

Don't get me wrong - the combat could be better. I'd love to see a TES game with combat machanics like Might & Magic: Dark Messiah. I would starve to death playing that game!

If were not looking for combat we shouldn't play an RPG??? I disagree with that, New Vegas is (most likely) my favorite game of all time because I like to use smarts to get out of tough situations and not just a shotgun to the face or a knife to the back. (I have done the majority of the quests and the main story line without killing anyone, including robots animals bugs ect.) overall there are RPGs that can let you be a pacifist. As for combat in Skyrim, yup, it's bad really bad. It's just a very shiny game, nothing else.

True, everything in this game seems shallow, you know, it's not explored enough. Especially the factions. But I think that's because the current gen consoles are really obsolete, as the technology development from 2006 to 2012 was huge compared to the development from 2000 to 2006, when the PS2 and the Xbox were somewhat keeping up with the PCs
