Why did you guys ruin Sneaking?

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 3:11 pm

Sneaking is not what it used to be in Oblivion, Fallout 3 or New Vegas! Now, there are certain missions where the party you're supposed to kill will automatically start talking to you when you get close. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KILL HIM? I'M AN ASSASSIN!!!!!! This guy starts talking to me then his 6 guards start hacking at us. That is so frustrating. I'd rather kill him and miss his part of the story rather than get the story and die. So frustrating...

Is your sneak skill low how many perks do you have in the sneak tree. I have personally found no problems sneaking and I can hide in darkness. To me the system is improved greatly over Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV...

As a level 37 Assassin on Master Difficulty, I've hardly ran into this at all. Not once that I can recall really. If it's giving you that much trouble, stick 'em with an arrow before you move in. The won't talk while they search for the shooter.

Eh? Have you actually played Oblivion as a stealth char? Skyrim stealth is far better. Shadow Warrior perk+dual daggers is amazing fun and very viable.

First thing I played was a khajiit stealth archer. Never had any of the problems you were describing. I had one guy walk up to me once and start talking, but I remained hidden once combat broke out.

Thats not what the OP is talking about. I have had the same thing happen on my assasin, and I share his frustrations. On certain quests you creep into the boss chamber to take your position.... and BAM he walks right over to greet you - even though the sneak icon indicated you are undetected. Of course it breaks your stealth and takes away your advantage.

Yea Skyrim stealth is a 'vast' improvement on previous Bethesda RPG titles. I haven't encountered this either but you 'can' reenter stealth once a fight begins if you can get away far enough. Also with Shadow Warrior you can destroy an entire room of enemies without any of them even realizing they are dying one by one lol. Mind this is at 100 stealth, but still.

That is what I do not understand. Skyrim has more depth in this area and you can hide in the shadows too. The dagger perk is also well worth it for any assassin.

Hmm thats curious. I have not ran into that problem yet. I can definitely see how that would be rather bothersome.

Is the problem consistent or does it happen on occasion.

Sneak is more hits than miss, But there are a few occasions where I ran into psychic characters who knew exactly where I was, even though I am pretty high level sneak, they were not looking in my direction, and I was moving at a snails pace. My biggest annoyance is that you can't blow out candles like the witcher or the thief games.

I'm playing on master as well. I like a challenge and a stealth character on anything lower is way too easy. You just need to pick the right perks and you can build a good character.

The title is so misleading that the first couple replies are all completely failed to comprehend the question? :hubbahubba:

I notice some quests have that scripting event completely broke my cover but not to the point being annoyed though.

I know exactly what the OP is talking about. There was a "boss" I was set to kill, and as soon as you get to a certain point in the room a script takes over and forces you into a conversation, which of course breaks your stealth. I've only played 35 hours at this point, so I can only assume there is more than one occurance of this. Still like others said, even though it can be imersion breaking, run away, hide, stealth back up to the enemy.

That would make sense. So its a scripted event, I have not done any quest yet...

Nah, I play all of my characters on Master difficulty (except my mage, which I play on expert since I still want to hope destruction will be fun and reliable). I like the challenge, and it got ridiculous at some points where I could walk into a room on Expert with my greatsword swinging barbarian and cut everything down without healing or casting a spell once. Even on Master, you still get some moments where you stealth into a room full of draugr sitting in thrones, kill them all, AND one shot the boss as he rises up simply because a good Assassin "build" can be so powerful.

One of the mage guild quests has it for example. You sneak through the entire place and when you open the door to the boss room, she opens a dialogue with you and attacks as soon as the conversation is over. It is possible to rehide in this case, but it isn't easy since cover is fairly sparse.

This some idiotic stuff I am hearing. Why and how on earth can a thief or assassin be caught in the dark. It makes no sense. I guess i have not experienced yet because I have avoided all quest lines so far.
