Why does every Skyrim NPC' have the same height?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 5:03 am

Im sure most of you have realised that almost every single NPC in the game have the same height. All the kids have the same height and all the grownups have the same height. I dont know why but it does kill a lot of the immersion ingame.

It kills me to see that there is such lack of variety, I would really enjoy to see some tall people, some small. Also it wouldnt hurt if you had a few fat NPCs. In my opinion every NPC seems the same to a surten degree, sadly.

I dont really know that much about designing games, but is there any hardware limits (xbox, ps3 etc) that would prevent such a design? Is there any particulat reason why almost every NPC "class" must look the same? (aka Kids, grownups, falmer etc)

---------------------------------------------------------------

I also feel that the NPCs tasks/movement doesnt seem reall. For example whenever I try to steal stuff from different shops I often find the owner fully awake wandering around at 2-3am... The NPCs lifes and tasks felt much more real in Oblivion.

Also it really kills the [censored] immersion when you do a sneak-attack!! I often find my self in caves etc sneaking up on a target(s). So i shoot an arrow into his back which does about 80% damage and a few sec. later you can hear the following line " I guess it was just the wind"... YES I BELIVE IT WAS THE WIND WHO ACCEDENTLY MADE AN ARROW AIRBORN WITH THE VERY UNFORTUNATE FLIGHTPATH RIGHT INTO YOUR [censored] BACK!?

Different races actually do have different heights from one another. Bosmer for example are quite short while the Altmer are rather tall.

hmm, really? Thats my bad, Ive never realised it. I look at the guards etc, people at the markeds and that look exactly the same to me. My bad than if there really is a noticble difference. Mods can lock this thread then :)

My female Breton always seems shorter than everyone else.

That's not accurate, High Elves tower over everything, Nords/Orcs are taller then Imperial/Redguard/Dunmer and Breton/Male Bosmer are the shortest.

There are some differences in heights between the races. However, within the race, it can affect the way clothing and armor fits and moves the character on screen when the heights are different. Each race has it's own variant on armors to fit their unique body contours. Not sure in this game how much diversity there is. However, each armor would have to be made in a short, medium and tall (or whatever) variant. It would be a huge amount of files to make this happen for every armor for every race and gender in the game.

There are some wiki pages that talk about the height difference for each game. It is subtle, but it is there.
