"Why don't you ask EUR-LOND GREY-MANE"

Post » Fri Aug 03, 2012 5:26 am

Has anyone noticed this? That lady always pronounces his name exactly the same, as if they changed his name, opted to re-record her saying his name and editing it in to each sentence rather than re-recording the entire lines for some reason. That or there's a very interesting sub-plot involving her being a cyborg spy from another dimension.

Creepy, and kind of fitting, as Eorlund isn't good at pronouncing things, himself.

It does sound weird. I just noticed this recently. All those other countless hours, I guess I just stopped listening to her after, "best blacksmith in Skyrim."
Now it sticks in my head every time I walk by.

When "Beverly Hills Cop" was first shown on British TV, Eddy's famous catchphrase was overdubbed with a more "suitable" version voiced by somebody who couldn't sound less like him if he tried.

"Get the HECK out of here"

"EUR-LOND GREY-MANE" brought that memory back the first time I heard it in the game.

What am I missing?

She says his name...and what?

Is that not his name?

Does she say it funny to some people?

OR...Is this just another "Slam-Skyrim-for-any-reason-I-can-come-up-with" thread by Long Knife?

I stopped really listening to any of the regular people I deal with. So if she draws out El's name a bit it's no worse than him saying Goths be praised.
Really most of the voice actors have some sort of lisp. Its like the used the cheepest people they could get, instead of the best.

To be honest that just adds to the immersion for me. Instead of having copy and paste, pitch perfect voice acting we can have speech defects and accents like in real life.

It's just as he described it. It sounds like they messed up the recording and spliced two takes badly.

I thought the first post made it pretty clear.
She says his name exactly the same, as if they had to edit in a clip of her saying his name into the middle of each and every sentence where she says his name. Was asking to make sure I'm not the only one hearing it.

Is this another Senor Cinco assuming everything I say is a random unjustified hate on Skyrim without even bothering to read what I wrote? :D

You can't be [censored] serious and I do hope this is sarcasm.

It must have taken some actual effort to find this...

Some of the people on here really, really need to cool down. A voice actor has a voice or intonation that you don't like, ergo the whole game is stupid. Riiight. And that 'lisp' is called an 'accent.' The one time a game company bothers to get voice actors that speak something other than budget American, for immersion's sake, and people are complaining about it. Sheesh.

I noticed it immediately. It's not bad voice acting, it's bad editing(most likely). It's nothing to freak out about, just an oddity. Though I am left wondering, if you turned a deaf ear to this what flaws did you give a blind eye to?

Oh I assure you I'm 100% [censored] serious. There's nothing wrong with some characters having slight speech defects and accents are good too. Tell me, does everyone you meet in life speak perfect English? Probably not.
I don't see how this is any more blind support than making a thread about a glitch that may or may not be there (I think she has two or three lines where she mentions Grey Mane at all) is blind hate.

Have to agree with this. I guess you could say it adds to the realism that some people have trouble pronouncing some things. I sure as heck make that mistake a lot.

What are we supposed to discuss here? the atrocity Bethesda has commited by editing a sound file, who should get fired, and what baby we should sacrifice to appease Sithis?

I used to think that you might be serious, but now I know you're a troll. Too bad there's no "ignore user" function on these boards.

On topic, yes, in real life people do not speak perfectly. They slur words, mispronounce or misplace their words all over the place. This particular line, yes, I think that they spliced two takes together. However, overall, I like the fact that different voice actors speak differently.

No it doesn't. Nor have I even commented on the game being stupid in this thread. I brought it up because I wanna confirm it's not just me hearing this. If you DO wanna have a discussion about the quality of Skyrim's voice actors, by all means, I'd be happy to, but that's not what I made this thread for. It's not a lisp (I.E. pronouncing Barcelona as "Bar Thelona," like some Spaniards do) or accent (i.e. pronouncing it "Yerlund Gray-mayn" like a southern US person might), it sounds like it's a clip edited in mid-sentence and it sounds lulzy.

As for how quickly one can notice this and then come to the result that is this thread.

1) Enter Whiterun for the first time, hear "Why don't you drop that stubborn pride of yours and ask EOR-LUND GREY-MANE for help?"
2) Walk up to her cause you want her quest. When you get close she says "I may not be the best blacksmith in Whiterun. EOR-LUND GREY-MANE has that honor. Man's steel is legendary."
3) Take her quest to deliver her sword. Forget the sentence, but again she'll say EOR-LUND GREY-MANE.
4) Having heard three sentences in a row with the name pronounced exactly the same, think "....huh, that was odd" and log on the Skyrim forums and make a thread about it to make sure you're not hearing things and/or crazy.
5) ????
6) Cake

There's a difference between a speech impediment and saying something EXACTLY THE SAME every time you say it. I've personally never heard of a speech impediment that makes your mouth flawlessly perform the exact same motions and movements every time for select words and phrases.

And for the thousandth time, I made this thread to ask if I was just hearing things. EVERYBODY PUT THE GUNS DOWN, HOLY HELL...

All the ones that don't effect gameplay in the slightest, i.e. most of those that people like to rake over the hot coals here on a daily basis.

I was talking about a few of the posters above you, actually. They took this thread and span it into a no-holds-barred rant.

I heard that, and it struck me as a deliberate sarcastic imitation, rather than an edited sound file.

All right, first of all I wasn't originally even replying to you, but to Thunder Dragonbane who stated most actors had some sort of speech impediment such as a lisp. To this I replied that for me it just adds to immersion, then in reply to my comment, you shouted abuse and asked me if I was being sarcasrtic. Now YOU'RE the one asking ME to put the guns down?

I bet this is a remnant of some radiant quest plans. It seems like Skyrim had a much larger scope at one point and they probably did things like this so they could swap out people's names if necessary. Perhaps there was meant to be a competitor to Eorlund at some point. Who knows what they had to scrap in order to meet 11-11-11. There's a bunch of lines in the CK about Erikur becoming jarl of Solitude, and even lines of Ulfric saying he'll gather his belongings and give up his hold.

I gotta agree though, it sounds somewhat odd to hear the same exact pronunciation.

What we could have kicked Ulfric out and spare his life originally? That svcks if they got rid of it....
