Why don't you like PvP?

Post » Wed Oct 02, 2013 9:06 am

I'm not going to judge anyone because I've had my ups and downs through the years of PvP.

I see many posts on these and other boards with people stating that they don't like PvP, will mostly PvE, or will try to stay out of Cyrodiil.

I'm curious why people have this opinion of PvP. Does it derive from bad experiences? Are you not competitive? Do you feel overwhelmed?

If you are running solo and run into another solo player in the PvP zone, is it different than running into an npc mob? The same if a group of 4 run into another player group..

Thanks.

Yes, it does derive from bad experiences. I'm competitive, yes, but not in PvP-sense. No, I don't feel overwhelmed.

I just don't like PvP. Plain and simple.

Also, keep in mind quite a few people on here like PvP. A better question perhaps would be to ask, "Do you like PvP? Why or why not?".

Just my two cents.

I like PVP decent amount but can easily see why people do not like it. It tends to be the PVPers who are the most anol about the best spec and rotation (them and many hardcoe raiders) and when something is nerfed or buffed for PVE, many PVPers scream bloody murder when it affects PVP even a tiny bit. Also, ganking pure and simple is not fun for anyone but the ganker. it also seems that in many MMO's a lot of PVPErs view PVEers as wimps or losers because they decline a Dual challenge or just do not PVP. The same cannot be said of most PVEer view on PVPers, Who view PVPers as self-righteous, greedy morons (which sadly is in many cases true).

I don't like pvp as I never enjoyed it as probably too many people aren't honourable or fair.

I just feel overwhelmed and get panicky and tend to not be able to focus. Especially if it's just me faced with a large zerg. So I do very bad in battle as I just can't think properly, so all I can do is press anything which is not a good solution. I never win and always end up dead.

So when I just wanted to explore a pvp area I'd get massive groups of people chasing me while I was not wearing any armour so it wouldn't get damaged. I'd hardly call an easy kill honourable or fair. I'd even unequip weapons to say I didn't want to fight but they don't care as they have the notion you're in a pvp area anyone who is not of our realm has to die regardless. Lets face facts it's the mindless kill everything brutes that are in pvp. Majority have no honour on the battlefield. I dislike that mentality and Iam not really interested in warfare.

I've never liked it and when I was in a large guild when new to a games pvp I wasn't sure what to do and the guild didn't care to help or explain as all they wanted to do was kill everything.

I just hate it.

I don't care for PVP in town where players are usually in a menu buying or selling ect. But I do enjoy staking my prey in the wild and even toying with it, as it runs for help.

But I also don't kill the same player over and over unless there trying to get revenge lol. The biggest problem with PVP is few players have any honor and just repeatedly kill a player hovering over their corpse or following them for hours causing grief to that player.

So many players hate PVP because of the torment

For me it's from grieving on wow an been killed just to have the person wait around your body until you resurrect or stay they an prevent you cause your a low level an their in their 60s an 80s so your no challenge to them at all.

An when it comes to mmo`s I'd rather play alone or do quests co-op if I wanted PvP I'd go play cod or battlefield.

I play mmo`s to escape the tedious an repetitive nature that most console games are.

I just want to explore this game the same way I do a traditional ES game. This game will allow me to roleplay my older character Otheral Lordiril in a tedious time in history and it a will be interesting to play him younger he is two thousand years old and this game is my roleplay of him and his ancestors and children.

Thanks for the well thought out and thorough answer. The theme to most of the responses seems to be bad experiences, getting ganked, or griefers.

As a follow up question to everyone... Do you think you would like PvP more if it was a fair fight? 1v1, 4v4, and the opponents didn't act like tools if they won? I'd still like to know how people view fighting a single player differently than fighting a single npc mob.

I like PvP in PvP-only games like LoL. In MMOs PvP usually svcks because developers can never seem to be able to balance the main PvE aspect of the game with PvP

A NPC is a computer, not-thinking mob. It's predictable, and if it's meant to be soloable, generally easier. A player is a lot more unpredictable, and therefore, a lot more difficult.

I don't mind PVP, and in situations of similar latency to other people, I am normally quite good at it.

However, I prefer PVE for the simple reason that it has more story to it. That may change in something like ESO, but too often PVP is just a boring grindy, repetition of the same content over and over.

Not going to judge, but then you turn around and ask is it because we got beaten, or do we just lack the drive to compete or is it just that we are pathetic losers?

I would judge, but the mods here don't approve when someone like me tells someone like you what I really think of you.

So I will just say this. PvP is like religion, I have no problem with the concept, it's the followers I generally have a problem with. (Stolen and paraphrased from a good friend of mine.)

I don't like PvP because I think most players don't like being defeated and/or killed, and I don't enjoy inflicting on somebody else a fate I don't enjoy experiencing myself. Why would I want to do something to somebody else that might make them feel bad?

It's called "empathy", or "the golden rule", or "being a nice person"

Sure, probably a lot of PvP players don't mind dying, but I have no way to know if the person I'm killing is one of those.

Have no problem killing NPCs because that is their whole purpose in (non-)life

I may do some PvP in ESO, but if so, will probably be in the healer role taking care of my guildies.

I prefer Me vs my prey, if that's 2 or 3 player so be it, I also don't see it as more of a challenge, just more entertaining given that players have unique reactions. Players, like NPC mobs have predictable patterns, so I will study them while in stealth so I already know what moves there going do before the fight begins.

I find it interesting that your focus is on the experiences of the responder (THEIR deaths). The problem with PvP for this pacifist, and I think many others, is not the dying, it's the killing. Not all anti-PvP types are incompetent or wusses; some of em recognize their strength and skill and choose NOT to use it to upset others.

I'm not responsible for what you do to me; I AM responsible for what I do to you, and that is the part I worry about.

*sigh* This is why there are still wars

I like to pvp but I am mostly a pve player. The reason behind this is not because I hate you pvp players or hate pvp or any such nonsense but the simple fact that sometimes I just want to relax and enjoy the game, sometimes I don't want to have to worry about other players jumping me and killing me because they want more points for a kill. On the other hand there are times when there is nothing I want to do more than set other players on fire and watch them burn in agony! :flame: -- :flamed:

The thing is, it's about choice, choice to pvp or not to pvp, choice to use a sword or a staff, choice to wear heavy armor or light armor. Elder Scrolls is all about choice, so why would they restrict that choice? I don't know, just a random thought I threw in there.

Now, the one thing that I do not enjoy about pvp is the attitude of SOME players when they get into a pvp situation. But hey, whatever, I can always just /ignore them.

I like video games, but I dislike most video gamers.

Well, that's not really true. It's just that PvP tends to attract the most obnoxious gamers: the ones that feel like they need to prove something and that killing someone else makes them an B.A.

That said, it's possible that in decent-sized group PvP that the killing is impersonal enough that the obnoxious ones won't be noticeable. I also like that they have a designated area for PvP. You don't have to worry about getting killed when you're trying to go about your business in PvE, and Cyrodil is enter-at-your-own-risk.

Holy crap. Chill out a little bit. Where did I mention pathetic losers or getting beaten? I asked about bad experiences, being competitive, or feeling overwhelmed. I had a conversation the other night with someone that had very limited experience with PvP and he used those reasons as to why he didn't feel comfortable in Cyrodiil. His only real PvP experience involved getting ganked over and over and he felt a little overwhelmed with Cyrodiil. I asked about being competitive because PvP is one of the few ways of competing in a game like this.

And what is someone like you and someone like me?

I hate dying and that is why I love PvP.

Games are about having fun. For me, there is no fun if there is no challenge.

Players offer a dynamic challenge like no other. No PvE challenge can ever compare. Can you make a boss tough? Sure. Stack on some HP and double his attack. But now that isn't fair. The boss isn't smarter than me or better than me. He's just inherently stronger. Its not a fair fight.

Against other players though, with balanced classes and an even playing ground, my victories are meaningful. Especially in 1v1 duels, if I beat you, its because I played the game better. I don't enjoy beating on lower level players, I do enjoy beating equal players, and I very much enjoy beating high level players.

Even in groups, if we win it often means we had better team work and strategy or more skill.

Its higher risk so its higher reward.

The entire reason PvP is fun is because I hate to die and I hate to lose. That makes winning much better. :) So don't take pity on me.

Well said.

Which is why its great that there is an open world PvP area (Cyrodiil) but that no one is forced to participate.
