Why Exactly Are People Fearing a Sub P2P Model?

Post » Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:12 am

Throughout this forum, youtube, facebook and comments on ESO articles I see a large number of people praying for the game to be F2P and B2P and everything or saying they'll never play or quit right away and such, F2P and B2P meaning you cough up $60 for the game and that's all you ever play.

So my huge question to these kind of people is...

WHY? What in the world makes you think you're that special?

I mean, let's look at some facts here. Most of us pay $60 for a full game such as Halo, COD, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed or even the singleplayer Elder Scrolls games. Now these games come with a variety of content ranging from as much as 10 - well over 100 hours, but even so that content does have a limit and a line so that $60 only goes towards so much content.

Now we can expand on that content with expansions or map packs and such, things we BUY, as in we PAY MONEY FOR THEM.

So my real question is, what the hell makes us so special that we expect to NOT ONLY have to pay normal game price for a game with more content than any normal game, but then as well to expect FREE, QUALITY, REGULAR CONTENT UPDATES without paying a dime, something we don't even do for far worse far shorter lasting games.

We pay for additional content and that is the end of it, nothing should be free. If they make a decent game that is enjoyable to play then as players and ESPECIALLY fans of the series we should be completely fine with coughing up a small monthly fee to ensure that the game makes money and in turn gives the devs the incentive to continually produce well made enjoyable expansions and slowly flesh out the world to the likes of which we will probably never see in a singleplayer Elder Scrolls.

On the other hand, if the game is bad, or very similar to others such as SWTOR (let's face it, why pay monthly for a WoW clone when you can just play the far better original instead) then by all means complain about paying monthly, but until we know if the game is going to be a disaster or not, please stop complaining and sit by, because regardless of how highly you think of yourself, you DO NOT deserve large content updates FOR FREE.

And as a side note, if you try to pull the old "well $15 is so much money!" just get lost because most of us spend far more than that every month on far stupider [censored]. In this day and age that's really not a lot so TOUGH.

Dont worry a thing. AAA MMOs are going to be sub based, hell I see even them adding a shop. Then theres F2P games, well tons of them.

It can be for some though. I dont do any extra spending. Being a college student can really drain your bank

Btw, considering how many damn F2P game theres, who knows if F2P developers are behind it. I really think players know where we at. Come on, we've used subs 15+ year now. 10 mill people pay sub for WoW gladly. Your game sells 1+ mill, you cant even keep 5% of them, devs needs to look at the mirror and see who to blame.

I prefer P2P. Games always turn out better, well maintained, updated, and taken care of. And yeah $15 a month? My car payment is $700 >.>

Was that supposed to be a question or just a way for you to vent rage?

I don't think anyone in his right mind would suggest this game becoming F2P, B2P on the other hand is an entirely different story.

1) Owning the game in subscription model means nothing. If I buy Skyrim, I can play Skyrim any time I want - I can't play any DLC if I don't buy them (I bought them all if you wonder) but that's fine, I still have what I paid for. Same can be applied to nearly any game, involving online titles such as Diablo 3.

2) Micro transactions are done by many games now and are definitely enough to cover content patches. For big content updates you just sell an expansion and there is still no issue - people who haven't bought one can still play the game without the access to new content (again - you get what you paid for).

3) Subscription model accelerates people quitting the game, if somebody is undecided having to pay extra 15 bucks at the end of a month can definitely seal the deal.

Guild Wars (1 or 2) goes along by just selling boxes and expansions, EVE Online goes along with having a subscription but not charging a dime for expansions - in neither case you see large content updates for free, which seems to be the premise of the OP - the difference is in approach, one is selling a product, the other is selling a service, and as a customer I just prefer the former.

i know a lot of people that have a huge problem with pay monthly for a game. the same people buy evry game that comes out. they pay at least 50$ at month for games. I also know alot of people that play Free2Play mmo's. Some of them then buy stupid Pay to Win items in the Ingame Shop an at the end they spend far more money for a Free2Play mmo than one that you pay monthly.

Its not a money question. It's psychological thing. evrytime i explain them i get answer back: "I want to pay a game only once so i can play it whenever i want hurr durr"

It can be for some though. I dont do any extra spending. Being a college student can really drain your bank

it you cant afford 15$ a moth to spend hours of free time to play a mmorpg. you should bedder search a job an spend the time on that instead.

I'd much rather buy a new game every 4 months than pay the same $60 for a small content update or 2 within that same time frame for the same game by using a $15 subscription game since the content they add never adds up to what a new game would be -- subscription models are for lazy companies that want to continue getting revenue without having to do any major work like coming up with new game ideas - and for Bethesda it is even a worse idea for the user since all off their previous games are already available with the modding community pumping out more and better content for their games than you will ever see them put out for a subscription based game - considering there are still people playing Morrowind (2002 release) and Oblivion (2006 release) - Do you think anyone would still be playing them if they had been paying $15 a month for 10 years ( $1800 for playing the game !) or 6 years ( $1080 ) -- a subscription model for those 2 games would have killed them by now and the servers would have been shut down most likely so that your $1000+ investment in them would have been a total waste instead off them still being used and still new mods ffor them being made that makes them still playable ffor the $40 - $60 investment --- So why would you want to enter a subscription based model for their game ??

Same here mate, P2P all the way. I pay 40 euro's a month in subs now and have over a 1000 euro's in bills a month. I can spend 200 euro's on a night out once i've got everything i need.

I understand not everyone has the same income but we really are talking peanuts in the grand scale of things.
