Why do follower cough?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:36 pm

Does anyone know why all followers cough a lot? I give them potions to heal or cure themselves but nothing. Is this normal for followers?

I think it's just to give them something to do aside from standing around and staring at you. I've had Faendal, Kharjo, Farkas and Aela all cough while following me. It's nothing, really.

You read my mind. Today when Argis cleared his throat, I wondered how long his sinuses had been bothering him. It just adds to the realism though...like when they blink or the chest movement when they breathe. I'm so glad they aren't like statues. :tes:

I don't think followers or NPCs can actually get any dieases. It's likely just something they do to let you know their still there.

I've only had 3 followers, Onmund from the College who sniffed and coughed, died a few times, and was worthless; Erandur from Dawnstar who sniffed and coughed, died a lot, and was worthless; and Brelyna Marion from the College who never makes a sound, never died, and kicks ass!

She's a gem!

Weird thing. I lost Lydia on another file a while back. One day I go back to Breezehome to do my usual loot swapping and I LITERALLY heard her MOAN. Not a cough, or a sigh.. a moan like a sixual moan no lie.

You can imagine how freaked I was like.. umm who's having a sixy Party in my Bedroom? Lol..

Go up there, and sure enough sitting there eating a Bread Loaf is Lydia..

My followers yawn alot too, maybe because I don't let them get enough sleep.

Smoker's cough duh. Don't you see them smoking while you engage in 15 minute convos with other NPCs?

I don't like it. It's so annoying. And it's not sixy when your wife sounds like she's coughing up phlem.

I think it's this...just to remind you someone else is in the room because my Housecarls do it even though I've never taken most of them out. :P

Lydia does this a lot! In addition to coughing, followers sniff, too. I imagine they have allergies or maybe the sudden changes in environment (like rainy Falkreath to dry and cold Winterhold) play havoc with their sinuses. It would for me! Now, why don't they sneeze?

Because the ONLY time they would sneeze is when you're sneaking and just about to strike an enemy! "ACHOOOooooo! Oops. Um sorry..." :bolt:

I think their coughs and yawns are little non-verbal comments on your choices. :P

cough = "I wouldn't take that tactic in this dungeon, you really should re-think that, but I aint gonna say that to your face"
yawn = "This is boring".

My followers already spout out random phrases when I'm trying to be sneaky around enemies. I remember one particular occasion where I was inching towards a bandit's throat with my dagger held high when suddenly - "Trouble up ahead." THANK YOU, AELA. I HAD NO IDEA. Luckily NPCs seem to be deaf to the comments your followers make, or else I swear I would've Fus Ro Dah'd that woman off a cliff the second we got out of the dungeon.

I didn't know followers spoke when you were in sneak mode. Marcurio is very chatty, but he also has an awesome sneak skill at level 40, and I've never heard him speak when I was sneaking.
I wonder if followers still yawn a lot if you order them to sleep every day?

Derkeethus doesn't do this for me. He stays quiet and only comments when we are near something or I am talking to him.

Only other time he talks when he hums a song.. It sounds like he is humming the Oblivion theme song.

'To Oblivion and back, as they say'

That is his greeting when he is following you, if I am correct.
