It's a show of superiority in your neighborhood, who ever has the best Christmas tree wins!

Your prize is the satisfaction of knowing your better than your neighbors.

<-Better than his neighbors for the 8h year in a row.

Well, not that I'm trying to kill the thread or anything but apparently there's a whole website devoted to this question. http://www.christmastreehistory.net/

Classic EpicFail post.

It's some kind of German thing. Probably Jesus never saw an evergreen (except from Heaven of course).

I thought it was a leftover from the original/previous Pagan holiday tradition. Can't remember where I heard that though.

Because while every other tree might be dead, or dying for the next few months, evergreen(or whatever type they are) trees act like its summer.

Holidays are boring if there isn't the risk of something spontaneously bursting into flames taking your house with it.

First time I heard of that comedian.

Weird voice, a bit monotonous, but I enjoyed it.

Yep , one possibility is that green bushes, trees and so on was supposed to suppress the power of the winter and protect against superficial powers(green= summer, light white= snow, winter, darkness). The origin is heathen, yes. Just like brewing your own beer for christmas , eating fat food and so on. Heathen origins, all of it.

in early christianity they cooped things from other beliefs and re-explained or repurposed them in order to shore up support for their faith. So it was with the traditions of the Pagan Yule festival.

It's popular to deep fry them in the south. Every year a couple of dozen people set their house on fire doing it, and every year the Department of Homeland Security releases a statement telling people to not be stupid and burn down their house deep frying a turkey.

Ah yes, southerners are often lax about fire safety, the Great Fire of London for example.
