I don't think that too many people are doing this. I do think, however, that the new system where the subtitle has been replaced by "keywords" is not as good as the old system.

Also, thanks for your clutter.

Honestly, that's always bothered me too. They make a long topic title and then just say "topic." That's not how threads work. You state the topic you want to discuss in the topic title, then ask your question or whatever in the body of the thread. What's worse is half the time, the topic doesn't even give us enough information to answer their question.

As far as why moderators allow it, it's not breaking any rules. It's not really hurting anyone when it happens or causing problems, it's just annoying to some people.

On the other hand, it's less annoying than threads titled

"I was wondering...."

or

"Guess what!"

At least with a long title, you have an idea what the thread's about.
(Not as big an issue on forums where mousing over the thread title gives you the first few lines of the post....)

Yep, as long as there are no problems with it we will allow it. There are times when I have gone in and "ninja" edited a title (EF I am looking at you :D) but I don't see any reason to make a fuss about it.

People need to eliminate a certain amount of ambiguity in their topic titles. In fact, there should be a rule against making a title that doesn't at least outline their problem. It's very annoying to see a post that asks for help in the title and doesn't even state the problem or issue.

Yes.

By the way, Xepha, yours has been the first of these "long" titles at which I've actually been annoyed. Way to rail against a problem by ... adding to that problem and exaggerating it.

I never enter threads that don't have titles that unequivocally announce their subject.

Edit: Unless I recognize the thread's author, in which case I might give it a go.

I don't really approve of titles like that, but since it's not against the rules I guess there's not much I can do but accept it. :P

The same reason there are rules against over-large signatures and a 200 post limit for threads? Because clutter is unsightly and awkward? It's not like it would be particularly difficult to go in and "ninja" it - like you said - and you could ask/force repeat offenders to stop doing it...

That bothers the hell out of me too. It always ends up being something I completely don't care about too. Or worse, the body of the thread is just another vague comment with a link, which then links to something I completely don't care about.

QFT. I usually ignore threads titled like that, unlike the ones that have several sentences as a title. Which i don't find that annoying. And i think the old subtitle system was a lot better than this current tag system, that nobody seems to use properly

I agree with AMP. If there are certain subjective rules, there's no reason to install another one in order to make the forums look more representable. If it's only a handful of posters, you'll quickly get them to stop anyway.

Absolutely. And related, I really don't like people answering with a link and just titling that link "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0" or "http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Wytn-_MSBo". This forces me to click on your stupid youtube link instead of realizing it's not worth clicking when you've titled it "my homemade junk vid with My Chemical Romance music sampled over it which is completely irrelevant and painful to watch".

Uhm.. you have three sentences in your title. :P
But anyhwo, it's irritating, but not as much as "I wonder if..." kind of threads. I much prefer the description bar to the tags.
