Why is Illusion good?

If you love followers, Courage(and all superior forms) are great ways to boost companions.

My perked illusion master vampire, can walk into dungeon at the start, cast a mayhem spell that affects everything, then pick of the weakened enemies that are left. Draugr deathlor, bandit marauders, master vampires, everything is affected.

The one thing I can't get the hang of, is Frenzy... bandits always eventually come after me! I've even tried practicing on the mudcrab ponds west of Whiterun; I think I should try being invisible and Muffling first.
Yeah, I'm no expert at it either. Even when they come after me and I cast Invisibility and they lose me they usu just run around in the room and don't really run anywhere else. Maybe that's normal.

Thanks people! I'm still not totally convinced, but I'll give it a bash. Appreciate your contributions!
You'll probably like it. Even if you go a little ways into it and lose interest wait until your character is 'done' with the game, max it out then, and just run around messing with it in the dungeons that respawn.

OP, you know that thing you did as a kid where you took your little brother's hand and made him hit himself with it over and over while you say "why are you hitting yourself? why are you hitting yourself? you're so stoooopiiiid."

Illusion magic gives you that same juvenile thrill. It's a ball of laughs.

Alternatively, you can put people into a restful calm right before you slit their throat. A... different kind of thrill.

Vampirism + All relevant illusion perks (including dual-casting) lets you Pacify/Frenzy/Rout almost everything, even on Master difficulty:) While area effect spells like mayhem won't work on some stronger enemies, mid-level spells with dual casting will:)

It can be a pain when it's low, that's why I dislike the perk system and no spell creation for Skyrim, but once you get higher skill level and perks then using Fury and Calm can be really really good.
My character has not a single point of health beyond the default 100 so enemies are really dangerous to me, so using Fury to get some to attack each other can be vital to my survival.

Sounds like good fun. I've avoided illusion so far because of my aversion to anything that doesn't work every time I use it. Having a random chance to accomplish something is a big turn off. Maybe I'll take one of my already strong characters and go ramp up illusion to check it out.

I keep reading posts extolling the vittues of Illusion magic, but I can't get to grips with it  ! Maybe I fell out of the Thicko tree, but could someone explain what makes it so good? Being able to make level 6 creatures turn on each other doesn't sound very impressive to me  . Please enlighten me as I feel I may be missing out :tes: !

Its not.
With all the perks the best you can do is mind-control creatures up to level 50 or something...granted that's basically every enemy in the game, but honestly the only spell I see as useful is the AoE Frenzy...and I'd rather hack my enemies to pieces myself. My question for all of those who are "pro-illusion" is why would you invest so much time and all those perks in mastering illusion when you could do the same for something that actually kills your enemies directly?
Aside from personal aesthetics, roleplay, and generally wanting to gloat from the shadows as your enemies kill each other...there isn't any reason to take illusion.

Why make the same character every time? Your question is like asking why a person would ever specialize in stealth archery rather than being a destructo-mage or warrior. BECAUSE IT'S FUN. That's all that matters. Illusion is a tool in the shed, use it or don't, but it is useful and fun.

Fun, and damn practical: Oh crap, that orange-brown blob ahead is a sabre cat. Since I'm lollygagging around the wilds with Ebonyflesh in one hand and Calm in the other, I have plenty of time to be on my merry way, or load up a bound bow to fill a gem.

If anybody can help, I really need to hear some play styles that use Frenzy though... I don't know how I'd use it in a draugr dungeon, as the only time there are groups of them it seems my presence is what triggers the crypts opening. Otherwise in various situations I'm really clumsy with it.

I considered asking in a new thread, but I thought the OP might like the info too.

I know that I can Sneak up to their tombs and kill them before they stand, but I think if I go past them they eventually get up regardless of my Sneaking. I assume that Invisibility and Muffle would have the same effect.

Same here, for those open slots in the walls where the dressed draugr, and skinned draugr, and skeletons are laid out; I love sneaking up to those guys and killing them in their sleep.
But I'm talking about, say, a boss room where the crypts pop open and you've got a dozen draugr and deathlords fus-ing you...

I can creep around them Sneaking also and basically sneak up behind each one and one-shot backstab them without the others finding me...even the Dragon Priests. FWIW I have Shadow Warrior so that helps if they notice or almost notice me after a kill. :ninja:

Actually, I have more difficulty getting the adds to pop up out of their crypts than I do going unnoticed.

The only thing I find good about Illusion is that it silences all spells. Other than that, I don't find it useful -3-

The ability to use fury, fear and calm spells to control the people around. Also my 2 favorites muffle and invisibility, which makes sneaking even easier.

After reading this and other posts about Illusion, I tried the Mayhem master-level spell last night. It was awesome to see a bunch of Falmer turn on each other for 60 sec., while Lydia, her Frost Atronarch and I watched from afar. The range is what makes this spell great, as it covers 250 feet so you don't have to be close at all to your enemies. By contrast, the adept-level Frenzy spell covers only 15 ft.

I like your style! My newest character uses illusion magic, and when she travels, she's got a ward in one hand and Fear in the other. I like to make the sabercats run away with their tails between their legs!

I don't have Frenzy yet, but I use Fury pretty frequently. I just have to pay close attention and watch my approach, to ensure that I can hit at least one bandit/falmer/wolf from a relatively safe and hidden position. Once the first one is Furied, if there are any more foes about, they'll be drawn to battle with the Enfuriated one. Then I can either loose more Furies to keep the fight going, or sic one of my summons on them. It's so much fun.

Invisibility is good enough- if used often and tactically- to be worth 7 perks for both expert casting and silent casting.

Every battle you can stop combat
Every battle you can choose where to strike- and get the first strike
You can disappear and reappear all over the place
You can grab any high ground or good position for free
The list goes on.
