Why is my ini lacking?

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 10:42 am

So basically, I installed steam, Skyrim and all that jazz to my laptop. However, when I tried to change some settings, some lines aren't there. For example, screenshot and border lines aren't there, half of the shadow related ones aren't there etc. So I don't know hwo to edit. Iirc there was a page explaining all the ini settings, so if someone could link it to me I'd appreciate it a lot.

Thanks in advance. :)

Have you launched the game yet? The INI file is not written until the game launches.

Which begs the question, why would you mess with the INI before you make sure the game runs? How would you know what the issue is if the game does not run?

Also, you need to know performance before and after the shadow settings as some of them will svck down your FPS dramatically.

Also are you looking in the right place...

Documents/My Games/Skyrim

and...

there are two ini, SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini

Vertain tweaks need to go in certain .ini file, the Skyrim.ini is smaller, but some tweaks need to go in here, others need to go in the other one.

I noticed that. The SkyrimPrefs.ini actually add more settings as you play. I don't know why, but it does. I've noticed that clearly a few times.
Just play like normal and the settings will be added themselves.
Or you can just add them yourself.

Oblivion and Morrowind had all possible INI settings in the generated INI. Skyrim and Fallout 3 do not. Only lines that have been changed from the default are included in the generated INI.

I don't even see a [Actor] in my Skyrim ini. I'm trying to change range, where is it exactly?

I know, I wouldn't know the lines are missing otherwise. Launched the game and all, removed the compass already. This is my personal laptop and it's much more powerful than my gf's laptop that ran the game perfectly fine so it should be able to handle it. To be more specific one of the shadow lines I want to change is the distance from 8000 to something less for betetr shadows up close but it's one of teh things missing. Also the screenthootting and one for skyrim's borders aren't there, which I want to change too. Those two were in my ini file by default, so that's how I'm sure things are missing.

EDIT: ooh I just saw some posts, I'm writing and watching a movie at the same time. :P Anyway alright, I should just play and my ini will get updated right?

Or just add them yourself. As long as it's in the right section :)

You can use these as a guide as to where each setting go (Display, General, etc): http://pastebin.com/hJBtab6g http://donotargue.com/cfg-makers/skyrim/
