Why am I losing Karma?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:09 am

I do not understand why I lose karma for "stealing" from people who hate me and I just killed. If they hate me and want to kill me, that is called a reward its not stealing -.-

those items are scripted as belonging to the dead owner and so thusly its still seen as stealing. it was like this in fallout 3

A lot of people are debating this right now. I think the general consensus is that it's working as intended, because you're still taking something that doesn't belong to you. I find it kind of annoying, though, because just about any kind of scavving is going to involve stealing from someone, unless it's a group that's hostile to everyone. On the other hand, I don't think karma has nearly as much of an effect in this game as it did in FO3.

It's especially silly if I blow apart a dead Powder Ganger, loot everything off of his corpse leaving his dead body to rot in the sun in nothing but undershorts, and then take two steps to the left and get a karma hit because I plucked a hammer off a table.
That just can't be working properly.
But I do think that you're right... it looks like reputation is far more important than some of these smaller karma losses, so I've been looting away.

Okay the problem you guys are having with karma and stealing is...

Spoiler
The first few places you fight baddies are places the Powder guys have taken over... If you are with the Powder guys I assume you don't really care about Karma anyway :P . Those places are being held. They where once owned by good people. Both the NCRCF, and Primma are still 'owned' by guys who are 'good'.

Spoiler
I freaked out when I came across this also... later however I came across a gass station owned by a streat gang (did not catch there name just killed 'em). That place could be fully looted with no karma hit. I also found an abandoned house... guess what no karma hit. The neg to karma is from stealing from 'good guys'... even if 'bad guys' currently live there.

No spoiler point... its not a glitch, its not a stealing from bad guys bad karma thing... It all makes since if you go deeper into the game.

Yeah, it's a side effect of the fancier reputation/faction system. If you chose differently, those "enemies" might have been friends.... in which case all that stuff is "owned", not just loot lying around in dungeons/buildings/etc.

The addition the system needs is, having the "ownership status" of loot effected by the faction reputations. (Hmmm. But what if you're hated by the "good guys".... taking their stuff would still be considered "stealing" by "the law". Huh. I can see that it's not a simple issue.....)
