Why do so many non hardcoe core elder scroll fans like to ha

Post » Wed Nov 14, 2012 10:07 pm

I frequent neogaf alot...and well obviously it's a large gaming forum of diverse opinions.

That said..i constantly hear members say I played 100 hours of Skyrim and thought it was awful.

Or some say it was the worst rpg they've played in a long time.

Just alot of big hyperbolic statements.

I recognize skyrim flaws, but I still think that even with those flaws it still manages to achieve the level of greatness that very few rpg's have done this gen.

I lurk in neogaf quite a lot and I know what you mean but mostly its either long time fans who were disappointed because it didn't have things from previous elder scrolls games or just people trying to be "cool" by hating a popular game. It's one or the other. Usually people who just plain didn't like the game for whatever reason wouldn't go to all the trouble to bash it like these 2 types of people would.

Here is my problem. If something 'svcked' you wouldn't play it for 100 hours. I played the terminator video game that came out after the most recent movie. That game was down right horrible. I played through it once.... and I tried to go through again and stopped after the second level. I'm doing everything I can to avoid going into a rant about it :swear: .

I see Skyrim has flaws. I thought for awhile it was inferior to Oblivion and Morrowind... but then I haven't went back and played either since getting Skyrim. Morrowind has better lore/story/characters, Oblivion... IMO the best skill system(not all leveling, just how the skills/perks worked), and Skyrim has the best combat system and overall play-ability

I don't care what other people think About Skyrim. I know what I think and that's all that matters to me.

Don't worry about it. There is always haters for whatever game you like. Btw were you talking about Derrick01 on Neogaf? That dude goes out of his way to bash Skyrim, just ignore him.

I like the "I played Skyrim for 100 hours and it svcked" line. I used to work in restaurants and that reminds of me people complaining about their meals. After they'd already eaten all or most of the meal.

To me, skyrim was a pretty good game. But an Elder Scrolls game shouldn't be "a pretty good game", it should be a monumental experience. I had this with Oblivion and Morrowind, but I just felt like I was playing a pretty good game when I played Skyrim. The environment is lacking, the NPC's have no personality(besides a select few), and most of the storytelling is pretty terrible. The game has great combat, pretty good customization and some very amazing experiences. However, its nothing compared to past TES games, in my opinion. Heres hoping TESVI is another amazing experience.

Neogaf is nothing, you should try rpg codex... a cult of Bethesda bashing weirdos, pretty funny to read once in a while.

Mmmm...well, how can someone be a hardcoe elder scroll fan and hate an elder scroll game? Kind of makes them no longer a hardcoe fan, doesn't it?

Umm... because they love the elder scrolls series and they don't want it turning into a pile of [censored]? I don't understand how hating one game of a series means you all the sudden don't like the series at all anymore. If I dislike something, i'm going to say it so that the future games don't go in the same direction.

One gamer's pile of (censored) is another gamer's best experience...

The irony is that the 'hardcoe' fan will rush out and spend money on pre-purchasing or first week purchasing, play the game, and then spend X amount of time griping and whining about it...why not hold off buying until after they have seen decent reviews and read the forums....that would save all of us a lot of grief and clogged up forums overloaded with the 'I love morrowind fanclub' complaints.

Well.. because not everyone thinks in the same way. I don't trust reviews, if the game looks good, i'll buy it. I can make mistakes, though, as anyone can. And If I buy a game, and think its bad, I'm going to voice my opinion if people like it or not. Just as I'd expect people that like it to sing its praises, but without attacking people that don't like it and vice versa.

I think calling Skyrim "awful" is a bit excessive by anyones standards, let alone if you've invested 100 hours in the game. It may be disappointing within the context of the series... it may have poor RPG elements... but I fail to see how anyone can consider it objectively awful as a video game full stop.

That said, I think you have to respect that there are gamers out there who have a lot of experience playing RPGs and video games in general. Even though Skyrim isn't an awful game per se, it's perfectly understandable that for many experienced gamers, it simply doesn't measure up to some of the greatest games of all time.

For me personally, there's a lot I don't like about the game, and it certainly doesn't measure up to some of the greatest games i've played - including the last three TES games; however it's still reasonably enjoyable and worth the money I paid.

This really sums it up.

I personally don't hate Skyrim, but its far too easy for me to see its flaws. I had fun with a playthrough that lasted just over 100 hours, but I can find little reason to start a new one.

I'm playing Oblivion right now, and although I really really like it (after lots of mods), I like Skyrim better. It turns out I don't miss acrobatics, athletics, attributes, and other things as much as I thought. And leveling now is much better,

Those things we lost I still say would be nice to have, but I've been getting along fine without them. Named soul gems, first person horse riding, short swords especially would be great. Bu I'm far from disappointed.

I'm not a hardcoe TES fan per se.. a hardcoe rpg fan though (crpg and pnp), and I'm disappointed by some of the "dumbing down" as older fans would put it. I don't need to repeat all of the points. It's nothing mounted again Skyrim specifically, but really towards the last few years of RPG games in general. Deus Ex is a more complex game in some respects, but it's only partly an RPG. More of a deep shooter. That all said, I still can step back and enjoy things. I'm really not that hard to please. Skyrim entertains me on a lot of levels still.
