Why do so many people want to play as anime-esque characters

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:01 am

All males are man-like, by definition.
Bwahahahahahahaha!
Oh you so funny! ^_^

Bruce Lee was kinda skinny you know.

BTW, you should take a look at some paintings of middle ages noblemen. Lots of curled, perfumed hair, frills and ruffles and fancy, elegant clothing. By todays standards, quite effeminate looking.

And every single one of them a trained, expert killer and the very epitome of manliness.
Reason why they've put all that make up and, wigs and the rest was in order to cover the fact that they all stank as skunk roadkill smeared with crap and had who know how many diseases (mostly STDs).

OT:
Bleh... I personally can't stand those mods and I think that those people really don't have taste.
Mixing anime stuff with TES is like trying to make an ice cream out of onion (I think I already said that somewhere, but nvm).
Still, I don't care since they are allowed to mod their game how they want.
I just hope that Bethesda doesn't get any ideas of implementing anything from animes into TES in the future because those mods are popular.

As for that statement, a bunch of skinny sissy-looking characters is just ridiculous. I mean, what guy wouldn't want to play some big, strong, muscular warrior with an epic beard? Really.

How about a skinny sissy-looking player? I know I find playing the chap behind us awkward.

Males are supposed to be man-like, not feminine.

That's an awful picture of me I just took, and I am a guy.

Sorry for not living up to your standards

Anyway, I don't really think we should care about that kind of thing when... well, there's a whole other more disturbing side of TES modding, and it begins with 'e' and sounds like 'Tetris'.

I'm a gamer, and I hate anime - I always thought that the sissy-looking boy characters that so many people seem to create these days just are like nails on a chalkboard to me. Males are supposed to be man-like, not feminine. And I personally think that the anime women characters that these people create with the skimpy-looking clothes with bloody bunny ears or schoolgirl outfits is so unattractive, it's not even funny. It's a sick, sick world we live in these days.
Really? Really? With all of the crazy things going on in the world today, your problem is with enforcing gender roles on anime characters? That's what makes the world "sick" by your definition?

Men aren't supposed to look like women - they should have manly features, not some skinny needs-a-Big-Mac-looking sissyboy.

I find the stuff that has been manly for ages to STILL be manly - such as facial hair, muscular or bigger builds, etc. Even long hair can be manly, as long as it doesn't look all glimmery and perfect.

Me. Just see my avatar which I'm about to return to it's original state.I like being skinny, nerdy and beardless, and if you can't handle people with less than stereotypical gender roles, well that's your loss, not mine, because you're gonna see a lot of them.

I didn't say you HAVE to play as a manly-looking character, I just say that generally in RPGs, your main character is modeled after what you'd LIKE to be, not what you are. I don't say that you have to have a beard to look manly, but an anorexic-looking person with perfect, flawless skin, with girly-looking hair is just ridiculous. Long hair is one thing - girly hair is another.I don't mind characters like this (forgive the link if it's considered against the rules) - http://tes.nexusmods.com/imageshare/image.php?id=112486

This, though it isn't necessarily anime, is what I CAN'T stand (once again, forgive the link if it's considered against the rules) - http://tes.nexusmods.com/imageshare/image.php?id=112330 It's not just the character's physical look, but also the sissy-looking outfits they make their characters wear...

@SirBryghtside - That's not what I'm defining as sissy-looking. See my second screenshot above for what I mean. I have long hair as well, and though I'm medium weight (not skinny, not fat, not overly muscular), I generally play as a character that has long hair, sometimes a beard or a bit of stubble, as well as some pretty big muscles. I once created a mage character that I made skinnier (due to the lack of the need of extreme physical combat), but I hated the look so much, I actually ended up giving up on it, then created a new one.

Again, it comes down to different ideals. I don't make characters I want to be, I make characters of either gender that I think are attractive. I'm not attracted to big lumberjack types, so that isn't the kind of character I make.

This is a silly argument, anyhow. Nobody is going to change their opinion on what is beautiful because some anonymous stranger on the Internet told them to.

That's not the purpose of a role-playing game. The purpose of RPGs is to create a character that you'd like to follow the story and life of, in a sense. You want to play a game to create characters that you think are "attractive" (which I don't see how the perverted skimpy clothing on women or sissy-looking men is attractive), you should go play some other game like the Sims. -_-

"You aren't playing this single-player game in a manner which I agree with, therefore you shouldn't play this single-player game anymore." Also, I literally had to laugh at the part where you're trying to objectively reason out how "sissy-looking men" are attractive. Everyone has their own personal taste; what I look for in a man, physically, is entirely different from what you do evidently.

I roleplay pretty seriously, dude. My characters do have a lot of thought and background put into them, and I don't use a single "skimpy anime clothing" mod. But I also like having somebody who I'm going to want to look at for the next 100+ hours, so that's the philosophy I put into my character design.

Yeah, because The Sims is totally known for its perverted skimpy clothing on women and "sissy-looking" men.

Your argument has no thought behind it and is sixist at best. Please stop.

I like anime. Not all of it is skimpy women boobtime lookat or girly men who are so feminine they are often mistaken to be drag kings. But I do believe that anime looking things don't mesh in with the art style of the Elder Scrolls universe. Imagine if in a minimalist cartoon of stick figures a well drawn, to the point of photorealism, character appears. That would totally look awkward.

Again, I would point to Monster Hunter as a game which successfully merges eastern and western art styles. The environments and monsters are very down-to-earth and realistic, but you're taking them down with giant buster swords.

If they're just "pretty" looking guys and girls, I don't see the big deal. In fact I welcome it since every character I've made are in their 30's at least which is a problem sometimes. Plus, it is your game so do whateverthehell you want with it. No skin of my bones. However, sticking someone that look like he'd walked straight out of [insert anime here] in a land of pseudo-vikings were everything is made for war, seems counterintuitive to me.

And then there are the hair mods....the hair mods. Dear god.

Yeh I personally think the sissy looking characters are a bit cringe-worthy, but everyone to their own. Not many people really care about lore when they play they just do what's the most fun for them, which is really what ES is all about. That being said, if anime ever makes its way into canon lore, my interest in ES will take a major hit.

You know, I'd like the point that this is a series which has had katanas, pseudo-Buddhist mysticism, and a background character with a name that sounds vaguely Japanese from the very beginning. If you're worried about the appearance of something Asian-like in this series, it's not closing the door after the horse left, it's closing a door that never had a horse behind it in the first place. Not to mention the strange idea that all anime is exactly the same, apparently, rather than the word just meaning "animation made in Japan" and is thus inherently too broad to pin down like that. Complain about the influence of specific ones, perhaps, or of certain genres within anime, and then you might have something close to a legitimate opinion (and if you don't know enough to know said specifics, you probably shouldn't be making that argument in the first place).

I get the feeling a lot of people end up ignoring the actual game in favor of it's potential to become a fantasy anime dress-up sim. Mostly I ignore it, although they get really annoying when they whine on forums about the art style being ugly and everyone looking old and then linking concept art from Korean MMO's to prove their point. Makes me wonder how they manage to go outside without blinding themselves.

Well while people are of course free to their views, to actually suggest that TES should change to an anime style? Well what can I say? Other than BURN THE HERETICS! FOR THE EMPEROR!

edit: ^ Thread? I remember that forum. It was called Oblivion Mods and it made me cry for humanity.
