I think you are close to the mark about MMO's. I think it has trained a generation of gamers to focus on character effectiveness over roleplaying a character, so perceived imbalances in the game touch a nerve where they feel one type of character is more effective than another.
I note that people who focus on roleplaying are less worried about such things, but I can't help but feel you get less of an experience when playing an RPG focusing on just the G for Game, when the real point to a game like Skyrim is to focus on the R P and G, triple the game
