Why only one ring?

Post » Fri Dec 28, 2012 9:05 am

Was a reason ever given/explained by a Dev for only one ring being wearable in game? I don't think I have seen a thread about this, so I thought I would ask. I cannot imagine it has to do with any sort of imbalance, seeing how there are numerous exploits already present.

I would like to wear multiple for mine just for looks really. Some of my characters are pretty important and would like everyone to know. I would love to be able to wear like four rings per hand, minus the thumb of course.

A ring can, for example, increase your magicka by 50.

We and our characters have ten fingers.

You do the math.

I feel the same way. At the very least they could give us the other back. Or, like I have seen in a few other threads, I would be all for some cheap clothing DLC type deal, and having them implement multiple rings being able to be utilized that way.

Not sure if that was targeted at me or not. O.o

On a more serious thought maybe it takes consentration to gain the benefits of the ring and having multible rings might be confusing for the mind.

It was, though I did not mean it in any offensive way. Point is that even two or three rings would give you ridiculous advantages in an already easy game. For now there are at least 6 spots where you can put enchantments, adding more would just do more to create even more godlike players. I don't really see a point in more rings, other than aesthetic issues.

There are a large number of exploits, but they usually require some grinding. Being able to wear many rings does not require grinding, aside from the regular dungeon delving. Balancing aside, there is also the issue of placement. Both in terms of implementing the feature to allow right or left hand rings. But why stop there? One ring on every finger, or even many rings on all fingers will wreck havoc on balance and require some effort for artists and gui designers alike to control it.

If you are on PC, you have the option of using mods. I remember some mods with elaborate rings (many rings on one or both hands) for earlier TES games. Maybe the same type of mods exist for Skyrim?

Well I can agree with you on that. Although I also think I could handle a purely aesthetic deal. It just bothers me seeing the one ring

Like I had said though, there are already numerous ridiculous advantages that can be utilized. I would feel deterred from ever having to cheat ( Which I don't anyways ) by having those extra options.

3+ is a tad meh, one more though couldn't hurt!

That's true I guess, especially with Resto Looping. I would assume it is very time consuming.

that's a problem that Bethesda themselves made. They could easily make it so that rings can only hold half as much a charge, and you can wear two, just like the last two games. A point I see in rings is maybe I don't want a boost of 20% to my sneak, but want 10% to my sneak and 10% to my lockpicking, or whatever. The point is you have more freedom and customizability with more equipment slots.
It seems they just keep dropping to the common denominator every game. I wouldn't be surprised if with the next game they say "hey 6 enchantment slots is redundant too, why don't we have it so you can only equip 1 piece of armor/clothing and can enchant it super good".

The thing about exploiting enchantments. In previous games you could enchant any item of clothing with any enchantment. Now you are limited to specific ones for specific items of clothing, so was there any real need to take one ring away? Playing a mage, I don't have a shield, so why not some mechanism where you can't equip a ring on the hand that you hold a shield? It would make sense from a safety perspective (as anyone who's worked with rotating machinery and a wedding ring will attest) and would allow a mage to have the same number of enchanted items as a warrior. It just seems daft you can't wear rings on both hands. 2 rings have been standard in TES games for a while.

I think they still could use a two ring excuse that has been done in multitudes of games. Too many and the magic on the rings interfer and could cause some problems. It is really dumb that we can only have on. I suppose it isn't hip in skyrim to where jewery, although I just got an image of a Nord with gold plate teeth, running around, and blinding bandits with the gleem.

Maybe have as many ring as fingers, but only one can be enchanted? So as not to get to OP.

Devalued magic and overpowered combat, possibly due to the game being located in Skyrim and mages having lost some of the knowledge=destruction of mages guild?? Only a theory but its obviously a deliberate move.

That definitely is a first. Never thought of it that way. Good point.
