Why is ps3 version in 720p and 360 1080p

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 3:46 am

Actually 720p is IMO superior to 1080i as 1080i is actually only 540 lines of vertical resolution at any given time as it shows one set of 540 lines, then the other. But does it so fast that the eye cant tell. Thats interlacing. But with 720p you see 720 lines of vertical resolution at any given time. Progressive scan anything is always better than Interlaced. Unless you are talking 480p. then 1080i would be better.

Not on LCD/Plasma screens though. What they do is to take the two frames of 540 lines each and build the single frame of 1080 lines. So what gets really cut is the frame rate. In half. So the 720p progressive is still better. Also because to see the difference between 720p/1080p one needs to be close to the screen. After few meters the difference has gone. There is a chart explaining it in this article:

http://mobilitydigest.com/why-1080p-doesnt-matter-get-over-it/

That goes especially for very high screen resolutions of PC games. Unless one sticks his or her nose to the screen they are perfectly useless. But true, many PC gamers do stick their nose into the (small) display. Pretty unhealthy.

The consoles would not be able to run Skyrim @ 1080p. The only reasons why movies can play on it is because the bitrate is constant. A game is not a movie.

really? because when I display the bitrate while watching a bluray, it certainly doesnt look constant to me...unless you mean it's constantly changing.

1080i is essentially the same thing as 720p. 1080p is different than 1080i. i = interlaced and p = progressive scan

How is 1080i the same thing as 720p?!

The end viewable result is basically the same. There's no real difference in visual quality between those two standards.

Apart from the fact that both the resolution AND display process are totally different for both of them...

1080p and 60fps is theoretically possible but not with graphics like Skyrim. And even with 720p the game only runs with 30fps, sometimes even less.
Only few console games this generation have 60fps.

I'd wild guess at less than 10 total. It's extremely rare.

It's rare, but less so than you think (darn... can't figure out how to assign text to a link with this new forum layout):

Recently, RAGE was at 60 fps, Driver: San Francisco, Forza Motorsport 4, and the annual Call of Duty crap (although the PS3 version is often a poor port which is more at around 50) are at 60 fps, and my most anticipated Ni No Kuni coming out early next year will be running at 60 fps. Other racing games such as Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer are also in there, Ninja Gaiden is supposedly in there, there's Flower, sports games, Ratchet and Clank, Folklore, Super Mario (for the Wii) and the list goes on a bit more. It's still rare, of course, but not that rare.

COD might be 60fps

But it's also a lame 600p resolution native. Like Halo3, garbage last gen resolution.

Actually there are some PS3 games that are 1080p @ 60 fps. Wipeout HD and Super Star Dust HD are the first 2 that come to my mind. Also Flower should be 1080p @ 60 fps. I have all three and the image is pretty fluid indeed.
