Why steam?!

Post » Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:55 pm

Why did they feel the need to make this a game through steam?!

I wanted to go in to this game blind so i did not check the forums for ~6 months pre-release. I had no idea this would be a steam game. If i knew i would not have bought it. Right now as im installing, i just want to cancel it and download instead. This is the reason why piracy is still a problem. It just punishes us who bought the game...

What does Steamworks mean to you? Senior producer Jason Bergman explains:

"Fallout: New Vegas uses Steamworks for achievements and other features (such as friends lists, cloud storage of user preferences and so on). Use of Steam will be mandatory at retail. So what does that mean? We’ve implemented Steamworks in as light and unobtrusive a way as possible. Yes, you will have to install Steam when you install Fallout: New Vegas if you don’t already have it. And yes, you will have to be online at the time of that initial install. However you can install the game on as many systems as you want (with no restrictions!), and you do not have to be online to play the game after your initial activation. Not only that, but once the game has activated on Steam, you can throw out the game DVD entirely and just download the game over Steam. If you don’t even have a DVD drive, you can just take the CD-Key from the box, enter it into Steam, and download it without ever using the disc at all.

For those concerned, this will have no affect on mod development whatsoever. Modders will still be able to create and distribute their plugins the same way they have in the past.

We made the decision to use Steam after looking at all the various options out there and decided that it provided the best, least intrusive experience for PC gamers. We think you’ll agree."

Try setting Steam into "offline mode". Should be in one of the menus. Then, whenever you boot your PC, it'll just pop up a reminder "Do you want to start up in Online or Offline mode?".

After that, just click on your FO:NV shortcut to play.

I am sorry. But we did know and it was discussed about the internet and not just here. It is also on the box. I understand what you wanted, I guess we all want "least intrusive" but I am quite happy they selected Steam instead of GFWL this go round.

I'm sort of growing fond of it as I am assured I can play from any pc in my home without hauling the disc from one room to the next.

Yeah... if this was another GFWL i would just give up on the game. But i dont get why we cant just get the game and play... I'm still installing btw... Downloading a patch through steam takes a while...

That's console talk. You should be ashamed. :)

Automatic updates rule. Less clutter and keeping track of discs and key codes rules. I love Steam.

Why $team? Ultimately, those commercial$ are why. It's like forced preview$ on a DVD you own when you just want to, you know, watch the movie...

Ah yes, the days of multiple discs and before rampant piracy. If this was back in the day, you'd still be downloading the patch, not applying it.

You'll be playing soon. Enjoy the game.

Oh, but i am downloading the patch good sir, its still downloading... Steam is always overloaded and stuff moves at a snails pace. Multiple discs? It was alot better than this. And rampant piracy? Its been around longer than u think...

God, I hate Steam. This deeply saddens me. I got the Xbox version because I wouldn't be able to run the game on my PC. I'm a big PC gamer, or was. But if this is the way that PC gaming is going, then count me out. I will not buy TES5 if I have to use Steam. [censored] Steam, and [censored] your stupid idea to use it. It's complete [censored].

I'll take Steam over Ubisoft's " have to be online at all times" DRM, disk check and StarForce anyday. At least Steam tries to make a trade off and offers you some value in exchange for the DRM intrusion (install on many computers, automatic patching, download games as many times as you want etc)

Companies will continue to put DRM on their games no matter how ineffective they are, they have to tell their share holders they are doing something. So of all the crappy DRM that are out there I pick Steam.

I am an old timer (many out there older them me of course) as I am in my late 30's and have been gaming for a few decades. I have to say one thing about steam and it is that it is the best thing that ever happened to PC gaming.

We are all entitled to our opinions and some people are resistant to change. I hated it when it first came out, but it is now a thing of beauty.

The Pros way outweigh the Cons. If you gave it a chance it may be more useful than you think :)

My reason is this I bought the DVD at a retail store, and when I go to install the game with DVD in the DVD Drive Steam says F*** the DVD were going take 3hrs to download it then install it even if you have the DVD in your drive.

Hey OP, I have a shortcut on my desktop for New Vegas so I don't have to open steam to play it. Go into game library and right click on New Vegas, there should be an option like Add Shortcut to Desktop.

Yes you can put a short-cut, but if your steam is not running it well open and log you in before it runs, then it well svck-up more of your computer's resources.

Exactly, I love steam. Used to hate it so much but I got used to it and now its great. They have so many great deals on games, like I got a handful of $50 games for under $10 during one sale.

First I hated Steam because of the downloading (That was per 2006) which taken a age to do it because I was in dial-up, the pain.
Now I like it.
I don't to have the disk in to run the game, Automatic patches downloads, I can play logged in or not, I can back up steam if I have a major up grade to the computer. All I have to do is put Steam in another hard disk drive by doing a copy or cut and paste. Then afterwards I put it back in the main hard drive by doing a copy and paste.
With Steam I always keep under the radar by not sharing my log in info to every Tom, dike and Harry out there.

I don't trust Ubisoft's how many time their servers break down?
I don't like put your reals names out Battlenet! I had issue with them by someone through email want my details. They want my WOW and Star Craft 2 log ins. Like hell. For two reasons, I never give out anything and here is the knockout punch, I DON'T have WOW and Space Craft 2. I like to know where they got it from.

I have had problems in teh past with Steam breaking my PC. Big time. OK I understand it is probably not going to happen again, but I am rather risk-averse when it comes to that sort of thing.

If I buy a game on DVD I expect to just be able to play the game. I feel that the requirement to use Steam is affectively calling me a criminal and making me prove I am not. After I have spent real money buying the game in the first place which just adds insult to more insult. OK I accept this is a personal perception issue but you are trying to sell a game to me after all.

If I buy a game on DVD I own the game for ever. Or at least as long as I retain the DVD in a working state. With Steam I am relying on a number of factors out of my control. I am not happy with this.

Finally all the rubbish the developers / publishers / Steamers peddle in trying to convince me that Steam is "The best thing that has happened to PC gaming" when it clearly isn't or "Steam is the least intrusive method..." when actually not requiring me to prove I am not a dirty thief would be far less intrusive just puts me off. If they fessed up and told us it was for financial reasons or anti-piracy reasons or because they think I am a dirty thief reasons then fairy snuff but here they are spitting on my cornflakes and telling me it is frosting.

I am looking / posting here because I am very tempted to buy NV but I am not happy with Steam (the last Steam based game I bought was such a bad experience that I sent it back for a refund on the basis that (1) it didn't work and (2) the selling website failed to mention teh requirement to use Steam) - so I am looking at the forums to see whether it is time to svck up and go Steam. I don't want to use Steam but I do want to play NV. So I am trying to decide whether I want NV more than I unwant Steam. I am afraid to say after reading the forums here I don't. It is about equal with just NV vs. Steam but then all the reports of bugs coupled with the poor attitude of those who either aren't suffering the bugs or believe that the bugs are all ina day's work along with the, ah, lukewarm response levels from the mods, devs & publishers is just telling me I should invest my time and money elsewhere. Unfortunately therefore I have not bought NV and I probably won't for the forseeable future.

Apologies for the length of the post - I feel it necessary to answer the question fully and with reasonable explanations.
