Why do the dragons tend to be one-trick lizards?

Post » Wed Oct 31, 2012 5:45 am

That's something that's always bothered me. I mean the dragons should know more than just one shout right? Why not use all of them?

I mean you'd stop yourself when using whirlwind sprint, but what if a dragon used it as an attack? You only have a second to think before you get hit by a freight train.

Alternatively a high level disarm shout should make your day very interesting.

Or maybe a slow time/elemental fury shout to dodge your arrows/lay down some serious hurt.

Those dragons guarding high altitude locations with sheer cliffs... one dragon powered fusrodah and you're flying off the cliff.

Also: is there a mod that ups the damage of the fire/frost shout? (both for you and the dragon)

Dragons should use more than one or two shouts (higher level dragons use two IIRC). I've no idea why they don't.

Ya, the closest we get to that would be the Revered and Legendaries. That's it. And dragons should know more shouts than a human, IMO...

Agreed. That right there would keep dragons not only interesting, but more challenging as well. Ones that know disarm should effect higher leveled characters too (if there were any I mean). Anyone else ever wanted an ice dragon to ice form you? Arngeir can do it.

Has probably to do with the mindset that dragons have to be easy to defeat because the are a part of the main quest and the only source to power up your shouts

I've got a mod that gives them voiced shouts (they actually shout the words) AND gives some of them Disarm and Ice Form and probably some other varied shouts that I haven't seen yet. I've been Ice Formed a couple of times and survived but the Disarm shout is the one that has really made them formidable, especially since I've lost a few high level items that I could never find again afterwards. My characters are no longer willing to equip a unique weapon when fighting a dragon for fear of losing it forever, and for the most part I've taken to using destruction magic for ranged attacks instead of a bow. Melee is not as tricky since I have a better chance of getting them from behind or the side and staying out of the line of fire but even there I've toyed with using Bound weapons just in case.

So, yeah, giving the dragons a wider variety of shouts really does change how you have to approach fighting them and makes them way more interesting as opponents over the long haul.

I hope we get that in a dlc someday.

I think the dragons just don't want to open their magic menu and switch shouts all the time. I don't like to do it either.

I think that the dragons should have multiple shouts based on their level. Normal low level dragons should have their breath attack (which is a shout) and that's it. The next level of dragon would have their breath attack plus a shout like Whirlwind Sprint, and so on, each level adds a shout until you get Legendary Dragons which have loads of shouts including their breath attack and so on.

Do those dragon finger look like they could reach the shortcuts easily and then find their way back to wasd fast enough?

Always bugged me too.
Would be interesting to see a mod that modified dragons to use maybe 5-15 shouts depending on the dragon, and it's level.

Fire Breath and the Ice Form would be great additions to higher level dragons, but tbh I don't really want to get Fus Ro Dah'd off a cliff by a damn dragon :P

Either bethesda wanted dragons to be easier so that people could get their shouts relatively easily, or they just forgot about giving them different shouts.

I think its the first reason though. So one wouldnt have to get super combat oriented to get shouts, maybe? Or so that dragons wouldnt be too hard, if not some people might complain about not getting their dragon shouts.

I think that the dragons do have different shouts, for sometimes when fighting dragons, they not only use their breath, frost or fire, but I have had them shout at me also, and more than one shout. But then again I also got carried away by a dragon in his talons. So maybe their shouts are supposed to be like the world encounters.

When a dragon uses a breath attack like fire or frost, it is speaking in an ancient and powerful language. A battle between two dragons is actually a deadly verbal debate.

"FIRE INFERNO SUN!"

"FROST COLD FREEZE!"

"FIRE INFERNO SUN!"

"FROST COLD FREEZE!"

"FIRE INFERNO SUN!"

"FROST COLD FREEZE!"

"...This is getting nowhere."

"I... agree. Krosis."

"FIRE INFERNO SUN!"

"FROST COLD FREEZE!"

"FIRE INFERNO SUN!"

"FROST COLD FREEZE!"

"FIRE INFERNO SUN!"

"FROST COLD FREEZE!"

"Oh look, this isn't an argument."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't. It's just contradiction."

"No it isn't."

"It is!"

"It is not."

"Look, you just contradicted me."

"I did not."

"Oh you did!!"

"No, no, no."

"You did just then."

"Nonsense!"

"Oh, this is futile!"

"No it isn't."
