I understand that they need one to pay for server maintenance and jobs and things, but $15 a month!!! That's a little high. I mean buying the game and 1 year of subscriptions would be $225!! That's even including the free month! Can someone explain why the monthly fee is so high?

Thats the standard fee for a Premium MMO.
