Why is there never a need for torches or eye of night?

Post » Mon Nov 12, 2012 3:40 am

In Oblivion I got a "Ring of Night eye" which was frequently used in dungeouns.

In Skyrim I've yet to use Eye of night, and I've only used torches for RP-ing, I've never actually needed light. The dungeouns are very well lit up and the only time I'm having trouble seeing is for a few moments after being grilled by a dragon's fire breath.

I play PS3 so no mods can help me.

I liked the pure darkness of Oblivion-dungeouns. I would like it if Skyrim got so dark I needed a torch or magelight or whatever.

Opinions?

I completely agree. The severe... brightness of everything has really started to bother me lately. Two moons are a reasonable explanation for bright nights, but not indoors or underground where they can't shine.
It'd be nice to have nights, caves, etc, dark like they are in Dragon's Dogma.

... Of course, there's also the playability. Too dark, and no one can see anything and will generally end up walking right past half of the loot. Lol.

There are areas where light is very helpful (Blackreach) in vanilla. DG has some VERY dark areas, as well. Let's hope the 1.8 PS3 reference means you'll get to go there soon.

In my own personal experience, the game has been sufficiently dark enough to warrant the use of torches et al.

Turning down the brightness will not give me the desired effect ie having to use a torch to see, because since the brightness is turned down the torch will be turned down as well.

Huh? Being lit up like daylight and being *just* able to see (with a torch), which do you want? It sounds like you're looking for torches to perform better/shed more light rather than having darker dungeons. Keep in mind, too, light effects from dark to light ALSO are taken into account with torches and spells.

I agree. I disabled the "Realistic Lighting" mod one time just to see what it looked like. Everything that was supposed to be dark practically glowed.

Considering how much time the player spends in dungeons, I consider this one of Skyrim's biggest flaws... and one of the biggest improvements mods can make.

I don't know what the hell they were thinking making the dungeons so bright. Were they worried too much atmosphere might overwhelm the player or something? Or are they doing it to show off the detail inside dungeons at the expense of atmosphere?

No that is not what happens at all. Yes turning down the brightness makes everything darker. However in daylight you can still see fine, same goes for torches and lights. I play with the brightness bar near the bottom, and the only downside is that when it gets dark at night it gets dark a little faster than it should as the sun goes down. Sadly even with 0 brightness dungeons are still pretty well lit. I can get through them easily without light, and then i just use light on my way out to make sure I didn't miss any treasure. I find it is actually darker outside then in the dungeons. I miss the quest in Oblivion that had 0 light.

I guess they tried not to spook new players, make everything user-friendly...

Game seems pretty dark to me. I use torches, while not as frequently as I do in Fallout 3 or Oblivion, I still use em. Even more so in Dawnguard. Got my brightness on default. It gets dark.

night eye + aura whisper makes you a super assassin. You know where every single target is guarding that exterior fortress so you can plan your attack and not just go in and die like an idiot.
