Why is this game so much more stable with autosaves turned o

Post » Wed Aug 01, 2012 12:32 am

A few days ago I turned off autosaves, and my performace has improved noticeably. About one CTD since a week ago, and just generally a much more stable game.

This is more then likely old news, but I just thought I'd mention it.

I still haven't tried this... And for my ole dinosaur, any performance improvement is a blessing.
Hope it's not a coincidence and really does the trick.

Yeah, actually. You're right. Autosaving seems to freeze up the game when it's actually Autosaving for me, that and i've noticed my loading screens are much shorter for whatever reason.

Technically, we don't even need Autosave with the Quicksave feature, so no loss there.

Interesting. I'll have to try it out myself.

Thanks for posting it.

I can't guarantee a improvment in framerate, but when I turned off autosaves, poof, I can exit doors without having to quicksave every time out of fear of a CTD.

I had the "possibility of a CTD when loading cells" problem before I updated my software. But this still seems quite positive, so I'm trying it.

Oh yes! Turning off autosave has made a WORLD of difference & guess it's not super old news - seems like a few folks haven't tried it yet - so good to discuss it! But DO remember to save...often...

I also just heard about this a few days ago and tried turning off all autosaves and can confirm, in my experience, it seems to make all loading screens faster. I am curious if anyone knows if disabling autosave reduces save file bloat?

This is also supposed to make a world of difference for PS3 users, supposedly. Read that in another thread somewhere.

Do autosaves slow down the Xbox also? I kind of am a...paranoid one about those. Due to all my autosaves I'm breaking upwards of around 150+ separate saves. >.>

Oh, interesting. I was not aware.

Guess I can go download those 4096x4096 textures and test it out.

Correct. I've had maybe one crash in the past 30 hours? gameplay. Before, it was ALL THE TIME!

Also, load screens are a breeze. Like maybe 2-3 seconds. (PS3)

And I am glad someone brought this up, because I have known about it for about 3 months...and that was on a mixed martial arts board, lol.

Step your game up, Bethesda Skyrim fourm...sheesh!

I have a theory, so don't take this as the truth or even fully true. Just a hypothesis. I have all forms of autosave that I can turn off turned off on both the PC and PS3 versions. The game is much more stable without the autosave feature. It seems like it has something to do with all the information that gets processed when playing the game. This information possibly will be processed and saved in bulk.

The game is saving too many things to be able to keep up entirely. It has five auto save instances you can control, and these all make the game freeze for a few seconds so the data can be saved. Like I said, it's possible that the data is often saved in a large amount. The autosave scripts might be so intense that the game is being stressed by its own resources after a period of time.

I'm starting to get more CTD issues from all my saving every five minutes... thing. Autosaves are clearly saving very large amounts of data that can cause issues after awhile. It could be a bug in the game engine, as well.

I recently used a mod to fix the meshes of some things in the game and noticed my performance went up. It seems like some of the meshes actually could be part of the problem. They have some holes in them of sorts, most likely.

Skyrim is just a resource hogging beast of a game oftentimes.

Yeah, it helped my freezes when I turned off the auto save at opening inventory. (ps3) My son took this a bit farther and turned off all auto saves, Including fast travel and "doors". He played for a long time and forgot to save, then his game froze.

It does help a ton with freezes on the PS3. I don't play my PS3 version anymore really, but turning off all forms of autosave that can be turned off in general just makes the game run better. I might see if the PS3 version of Oblivion runs better if I can turn off the autosave function. Only stable TES game when it comes to autosave is Morrowind. Might see if the PC version has a toggle for autosaving.

This shall be a fun experiment. There's no way to truly get the game to stop freezing, though. Your son probably has a ton of stuff lying around his in-game homes, which can cause freezes. It happened to me when I tried to see if I could make a mountain of jewels on the PS3 version.

I don't know why people would have uato saves turned on in the first place. But that's just me though. It's a hassle going through multiple doors.

I may try this, though I fear my forgetfulness may cause me to not save for long periods of time, rendering me vulnerable to heartbreaking amounts of data loss. I need a lesson in game-saving discipline.

Turning off auto-save on 360 cut my load times in almost half. I keep the save on "wait" becuase I use it as a quick save on Xbox. When I clear a room in a dungeon or whatever I hit back and wait an hour.

I do this too, on the PS3. Can anyone confirm if having that on slows stuff down?(outside of actual waiting)
