Why wont it display in 1080i?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:50 pm

Im just curious.

On the back of the game case. In the HD Video Output box it states that the game is caple of being being played in 480p, 720p and 1080i.

Yet when I play the game and push the display button on my TV remote control, it says the game is only being played in 720p.

I own a TV that is well capable enough to do all resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p)

P.S. And yes the Display Settings on my PS3 are all check boxed to the right settings

I am having a very similar issue. the ps3 menu screen is crisp and looks to be in 1080p), but when i load skyrim, and go back to the ps3 menu screen, the text looks much bigger and blurrier than before i loaded it, like when the game loaded it went into standard definition. does anyone know how to remedy this? it looks terrible atm.

note: i switched TVs today, the previous TV i was playing it on was fine, and the game looked much better on that one, so idk...

The thing on the back of the box shows what resolution the game is compatible with, not what it will actually display at. If your TV wasnt capeable of displaying 720 but ONLY 1080i then thats what it would display at. However since 720p is the preffered display resolution for 99% of the PS3 games out there, the game will auto-choose it should your TV be capeable of showing it.

Besides... 720p is better than 1080i, so it shouldnt be a huge issue for you ;]

No offense but that's total baloney. Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus runs at 1080p, and the game doesn't "choose" 720p.

I've also run FF XIII and GTA 4 at higher resolutions than 720p.

I figure it was intended at some point, but probably when they saw the lag the game has at even 720p they canned the idea, but the boxes were printed.

Nice selling point though. Got me to buy it for the 1080i. Someone at Bethesda should run for Congress.

A little off subject, uncharted clearly states on the back of the box 1080i, yet it plays in 1080p on my tv. Strange...

Increasing the resolution would probably decrease the frame rate a bit. IMHO, not worth it. People have reported better performance by switching to 480P. So, unless you want a slide show, I'd stick with 720P.

@boingo

I know a lot of games can and will run at higher resolutions, hence why I said 99%. However it is down to the developer to allow it. A lot of them restrict it, I too would love to run this at 1080p as the 3D upscale in my tv works so much better that way however I've resigned myself to the fact that most ps3 games will run at 720.

Especially cross platform games.

Go into the video settings on the PS3 itself and disallow it from outputting anything other than 1080i/p. If that doesn't work then I dunno what to tell you as that's outright forcing it to use that resolution.

I'm gonna try this tonight but we shouldn't have to do this. I have an older HDTV that only supports 480i, 480p and 1080i. Skyrim plays at 480p on my TV when it should play at 1080i. I had the same problem with the Uncharted 3 MP Beta. I went on their forums and started a thread about it, Naughty Dog stickied the thread, and sent out a patch in a few days, viola! It played in glorious HD!

Bought U3DD day one and it supports 1080i just like it says on the back of the box.

Bought Skyrim this weekend. Was excited to see that it supports 1080i.

Extremely disappointed that it actually doesn't :(

umm note this can can't play 1080p. progressive is better then interlaced....hence the i next to 1080. 1080interlaced is not as good as 720 progressive. A tv capable of progressive scanning will keep any progressive definition as it's first choice. You may have to set your tv to "i' to get it to go with that mode. So actually it's not baloney....His/her statement is awesome sauce.

Me too. I have a Panasonic CRT HDTV that only supports 480i and 1080i for an HD image (not even 480p!), so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that Skyrim's box claimed it could output in 1080i (since none of Bethesda's other games do). I was more than a little let down to see that not being the case, and believe me, I tried forcing the game to display in 1080i as best I could. There seems to be one person on these boards who successfully got it to work, but this person also used a TV that can *only* output in 1080i, and supposedly the output was glitchy with parts of the interface cut off, leading me to believe that 1080i is not fully implemented in the game (I have also heard that the European release packaging omits 1080i as a possible resolution, so Bethesda might have changed their mind about supporting it during development but failed to give whoever produces their US packaging the memo).

I tried sending Bethesda a support email about this but have still yet to receive a reply, and considering the number of people playing on PS3s with TVs that *don't* support some flavor of progressive scan is quickly dwindling I don't think this is a particularly hot issue for them. :(

Even in 480p mode parts of the interface are cut off. I could live with it if the game had a display adjustment option to make the entire image appear onscreen
