Why would someone join the Stormcloaks if they aren't a Nord

Post » Thu Oct 18, 2012 12:31 am

Although they are perhaps a little shallow and not as fleshed out as they could have possibly been, I still always thoroughly enjoy the civil war quests and they are the one part of the game besides the Dark Brotherhood which always remains in my mind. Since deciding to return to Skyrim after a much too long period of break from the game, I thought about it and decided that I wanted to incorporate the love for these quests directly into a character build. Whilst a straight-up solider build was a possibility, I decided to at least attempt to be a bit more unique and my investigations into The British Red Cross for an ICT course had me arrive at the idea of a combat medic. Although I haven't decided all of the fine details, this build basically involves playing as a healer with a few combat skills for self-defence. I want to play as a Breton since both sides are primarily human and Bretons fit best within a magical role out of the human races. However, since I always go Imperial, I feel as though it would be cool to be a Stormcloak. For what reason might a Breton join the Stormcloaks who are pretty much all Nords?

If your Breton (or character of any other race) identifies him/herself as nordic and/or thinks of Skyrim as their homeland, is 'a Nord in heart', that is enough of a reason to open up the possibility of joining the rebellion.

Hate of the Thalmor and conviction that Ulfric could really damage it, for example... Or being a Thalmor agent and being convinced that Ulfric could weaken the Thalmor's ennemies by dividing them.

Hates the Empire. Hates Elves. Mercenary. Thinks the Empire is a lost cause and wants to be on the wimming side.

Well, as with most of my character builds, I have them born in Skyrim despite their race. Perhaps I will have it so the event at Helgen and his desire to see his homeland out of war make him join the Stormcloaks. Also, why does the quick post and quote not work on the forums any more? I have to go advanced...

If your Breton thinks that the Empire is a shadow of its former glory, that it's overextended, outmaneuvered and outmatched by the Thalmor, and is rotting from the inside with corruption, that'd probably be a good incentive to join the Stormcloaks. Maybe he thinks that if the Empire shrinks back to a manageable size, it could ally with the other human races against the Thalmor and have a better shot at winning.

Well, my Bosmer Nightblade joined the Stormcloaks because he sees Ulfric as potentionally a new Tiber Septim. He fought for the Legion in the Great War (he's a refugee from Valenwood because his family were murdered by the Thalmor) and sees Titus Mede II as a traitor. After the peace treaty he tried to assassinate the emperor but was prevented by a member of the Penitus Oculatus (ironically he's joined the Dark Brotherhood).

I don't know about a Breton, though. They have a lot to lose by a weakened empire. Maybe he believes, like my Bosmer, that Ulfric might replace the emperor? Or, if you play the main quest until you learn that you're Dragonborne you could role-play it in a way that maybe his ambitions are to take the throne for himself.

Or being a Thalmor agent and being convinced that Ulfric could weaken the Thalmor's ennemies by dividing them.

My reason has something to do with a masked man, an axe, and a kind dragon who stopped by and changed my life.

Whether or not I agree with the SC way of life doesn't matter. I have this thing against people telling me my head's coming off even though I'm not on a list.

The two best reasons for why your non-nord character might join the Stormcloaks are:

a ). Your character was a devout Talos worshipper who's annoyed at the outlawing of Talos worship.
b ). Your character hates the empire.

Be warned though that Galmar isn't a fan of Bretons- he generalises the Bretons of High Rock as 'prissy' and 'milk drinkers' after finding out that High Rock are not willing to send aid to the Stormcloaks.

Usually when my characters joined them it was because they believed joining them would make things worse for everyone else and that is what they wanted.

Revenge for putting you to the Headsman Block? That is usually my main motivation for my non-Nord joining the Stormcloaks.

That's because they won't help. He had nothing against my Breton when she signed up for the 'Cloaks.

She was neutral for long time - she never cared much for the Empire, Cyrodiil where she was born didn't treat her well, but she didn't trust Ulfric much either - but in the end, after travelling Skyrim for several months, slaying Alduin and everything, she felt she was in a position to actually make a difference and put an end to the war. Her love for Skyrim and the Nord culture (which she really embraced), her hate for the Thalmor and her bad memories of the events that eventually led to her facing an execution all pushed her towards the Stormcloaks. So did her Nord husband, who finally convinced her to join them.

Your character is born in Skyrim, Nord father and Breton mother. TES science made you turn out as a Breton but in your heart you're a Son/Daughter of Skyrim and have always been.
