IMPERIALS HAVE THE EMPIRE OF BRETONS AND IMPERIALS

Even the Thalmor themselves seem to think the Stormcloaks have a decent chance of creating a unified threat to them. Hence the dossier.

But that's rather inconvenient to this "only the empire can bring unity" crap theory.

Tullius however is a good general. I think during the empire's downfall he's got a good chance to be one of the heads that come out on top and help turn things around against the thalmor. He's a bit lacking in understanding the political climate though.

I'd disagree. The stormcloaks were winning the war until Tullius showed up and nearly ended it(At which point it became a stalemate). That implies he's a rather competant tactician. He's an awful politician though and doesn't seem to consider why his men are fighting he just expects to have them.

Which is ironic, considering what I think Tullius really is in the scheme of divine will:

General Tullius represents Tiber Septim, a man interested in politics and power.

Jarl Ulfric represents the nordic side of Talos, a powerful man gifted with the Thu'um and an axe to grind with the Elves.

The Stormcloaks just don't stand a chance against the Dominion alone.

Even if that were true, you have to give them credit for saying "No! I'm not gonna hide what I think, because that's for cowards, and I will kill any man or elf who says otherwise!"

I see arguments for both sides really.

As do I. I sympathize with the Stormcloaks' cause, as do all of my Legion characters. I completely understand why they'd want to be free of the Empire, but the thing that they don't seem to realize is that the only way to beat the Thalmor is together, not apart. My Bosmer character, for example, is a huge supporter of the Legion. He's also a devout follower of Talos, wears an Amulet of Talos at all times, and attacks every Thalmor agent he sees.
Spoiler
And it isn't just my characters, either. At the end of the Legion questline, when Ulfric dies, Legate Rikke quietly says "Talos guide you."
All in all, though I can see why the Stormcloaks want to be free, all it would do is make the Thalmor all the more powerful.

Forgive us if we are hesitant to destroy what remains of the Septim Empire. I've fond memories of the Empire:

-Wulf (Talos)
-Uriel
-Martin
-The Blades
-Even the mindreading, teleporting, legalist/fascist Guards in Oblivion!

The Empire represented what good could be accomplished through a government, even if it wasn't perfect. It was responsible for defeating the Aldmeri Dominion before the Third Age, bringing order to the Illiac Bay, stopping the Vvardenfell Crisis, and even saving Nirn itself from Mehrunes Dagons tyranny!

Yeah, I don't think either side is very good. For me it is a choice about the lesser of two evils. Eorlund Grey-Mane is right when he says "At the end fo the day, Stormcloaks and Imperials aren't all that different; both want to tell you how to live your life." Of course, he goes on to say he prefer a Nord telling him how to live, but he makes a good point about both sides.

Because unless you're a Nord you aren't going to support a Skyrim "For The Nords"

My character would join the Imperials for his/her own reasons. For one of my characters, it was because she grew up in Cyrodiil where she worked as an apprentice for a Legion blacksmith. The Empire was her home, it grew on her, and it would be painful for her to not do something about its fall.
As for me? I don't know, I can't fight.
Maybe I could be a scout or a healer... but even then I don't know why I'd join an army. And I'm not that big of a fan of the Empire ('cept for in Oblivion), so especially not their army.

That's why he's a schmuck. Great general, but he's a schmuck. Cold. Calculating. Couldn't really care less about the whys, just the hows.

The Stormcloaks, for the most part, are incredibly racist and I just don't feel right joining them unless I'm playing a Nord.

Well my first reason to join the Imperials was Hadvar says he's going to join the imperials in defending Helgen at the start of the game. The Stormcloaks are only trying to run away.

Because the common enemy is the Thalmor. Which would have the better chance of defeating the Thalmor: a single army from Skyrim (the Stormcloaks) or the combined armies of Cyrodiil, High Rock and Skyrim (the Empire)?

And what have the Empire done wrong? They were going to execute you because, presumably, you had committed some sort of crime. The signing of the White-Gold Concordat saved an exhausted Empire from being crushed by the Aldmeri Dominion. Titus Mede II saved the Empire, at the cost of the worship of a God - and even then he probably planned to continue the war once the Imperial Legion had recovered. He probably knew that, in secret, Talos worship would continue.

But what did Ulfric Stormcloak do? He murdered the High King and tried to take the throne, without a single thought of the threat of the Thalmor. He's power hungry, and is using Talos worship as an excuse to gain power.

The other school of thought is that he doesn't compramise, he doesn't like that the Imperials are being told to Please continue, my good sir. and take it and he certainly doesn't like that the Imperials are telling everyone else to follow suit or die.
One man's revolutionary is another man's terrorist, it's all about perspective, really.

That's because he's a general, it's his job to do what his superior commands. And he's genre savvy enough to realize that this rebellion is exactly what the Thalmor want.
