Why is Xbox One so huge?

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2016 9:00 pm

I just got an Xbox One (didn't have one) my aunt gave it to me and she rarely used it so you can say it's new. Now i really like color Microsoft went for. I like the black glossy paint it looks neat and sleek. But one thing i noticed fast is that it's huge as hell compared to my PS4. Like in some way it looks like an old VCR from the 90's also the power brick is huge but that's what i don't understand PS4 is light and slim yet its more powerful yet it's much smaller. Xbox One is bigger but less powerful. lol ?? .. Why?

What's the point in asking such a question. It's about the games you can play not the gloss paint or power brick lol?

They used a normal sized disc drive where the Playstation used a slim form factor one. In response to early 360's desoldering themselves they went way overboard with a massive heatsink and fan for the CPU/GPU. All that and the mainboard is fairly sparsely populated and only on one side vs. the Playstation's dense, two-sided one. All in all the Xbox One has a lot of empty space inside the chassis and is probably dirt cheap to produce.

So in the next year or two they can sell you that new one they've been working on that is much smaller and doesn't have a brick and is more powerful.

Yeah i know about that one that one looks just cool as hell. They improve it 10 fold. I am probably gonna get that one and the Skyrim remake. Do you think the remake will have 4K support? That would be cool. But i know for sure Sony is also making a newer version and a slimier one.

i mean remaster not remake lol

Yeah, Sony have always been pretty slimy. Probably why a large portion of gamers genuinely hate them.

From a technical aspect, the XBOX One is that BIG for two reasons.

First, it has a larger fan that measures 112mm (instead of 85mm of he PS4), taking up a good quarter of the box space.

Second, the motherboard is quite BIG and XBOX One uses a PC-style Blu-ray drive. (PS4 uses a stripped down blu-ray drive)

Even so, there is a lot of empty space in the Xbox One.

Also Sony decoded to integrate the PSU as well. The PS4 is smaller and lighter than the Xbox One.

It seems Sony has done a better job as Microsoft.

XBOX One lead designer, Carl Ledbetter, explained that:

"The reality is that there are very real issues around cooling when you're pushing some number of watts in the processor, therefore the thing has to have some size to it."

Spaceballs was a Mel Brooks comedy which parodied Star Wars. Both the hero and Dark Helmet)played by Rick Moranis) were in a light saber battle with both sabers held at their crotches. The force was called the "Shwartz". Dark Helmet told fhe hero that his Schwartz was bigger than his and both of them looked T their crotches. I would link the YouTube clip but I'm on my phone.

Can some helpful soul that's on a computer please post the YouTube link?

*sigh* saying I'm on my phone reminded me that when this forum is closed I'm gonna have to leave because the new forums don't support my iPhone.

Sorry for any typos. I'm in blazing sunlight on a bench waiting for Mrs. Fantasyjunkie shopping for a handbag.

Eh. I generally don't care which one is more powerful and don't care about the size. Microsoft serves me services that are more useful to me than Sony, so I have an XONE.

The Xbox One's size is one of the main reasons why I don't plan on buying it. Besides, my Xbox 360, which is slimmer than the One, runs just fine and I still have a lot of games to beat and replay for it. But even if I was to buy the Xbox One slim, I'd only get it for the Master Chief Collection, to play the original games in better resolution and FPS. But that's about it. My PS4 has better game choices for me.

I'd imagine (as others have mentioned) it has something to do with better cooling. Electronics that aren't crammed into a tiny housing also tend to be easier to repair, expand, etc. Unless space is at a premium, I typically prefer a larger housing for those reasons. It's one of the reasons I only carry a cheap notebook PC around and leave the heavy lifting to my desktop machines.
