Why you gotta be cheap? Seriously.

Several years ago I had built a car. I put $15k into this car for "go-fast" parts. Now, when I say $15k in "go-fast" parts I mean, real honest to goodness "go-fast" parts. Not that I put a wing on my car and some stickaz and it's fast yo!! Parts.

I put $6k into the engine alone. Another $1200 into the suspension. Another $4k into the transmission. You see where I'm going with this right?

Well, then my daughter was born and I decided it was time to put the car away and get rid of it. It wasn't trustworthy, nor was it reliable. I couldn't safely put my daughter in it to run to the store without the fear that I might blow a piston or throw a rod or tear up the transmission. I tried to sell it as one piece. But no one was willing to pay me for it. I wasn't asking for a lot but I wanted something for it. What I was asking wasn't even Blue Book.

I then decided to part it out. I spent the next several months taking it apart and selling it. I sold the engine and turbo as a unit at 1/8 of what I spent on it and it only had 500 miles on it; the engine wasn't even broken in.

I'm still sitting on the transmission and I surmise it's not worth anything now. But some of the parts in it should be. Namely the transfer gears. Yes, for those that know cars it was an automatic...one...fast...automatic. First gear was around 70 miles an hour. And that was thanks to the transfer gears. I can't find anyone willing to buy them. They don't make the gears anymore but everyone wants something for nothing.

Which brings me to my next point.

I bought fuel injectors for the car. Paid nearly $300 for them. The were installed but never run. I began taking the car apart shortly after I put them in. They are new. I've been trying to sell them to people who want them for their builds. These injectors retail at around $70 EACH. That's $70 for ONE. And that's TODAY's price. I was just offered $35 for all four.

Now, I'm not looking to make what I paid for them back. I'm not even looking to turn any kind of a profit. BUT, to be offered $35 for something that is in demand just seems...silly. A slap in the face.

I ignored this offer. I'm not sure how to proceed on it. I don't feel right about it.

My question to you forum people. Would you move on this offer? Would you take the money?

I've had these injectors sitting in their boxes on my computer desk for years. But I still would rather throw them out. I'm slightly pissed that people want these high performance parts but aren't willing to pay for it. When I built my car I literally spared no expense to have it built with the best parts and built correctly. So, when I went to a distributor and asked for a specific part I didn't try to niggle it down cheaper. There's a reason why it costs as much as it does. Now, granted, I did receive some discounts but then again, I was buying a lot of parts all at once from one dealer. So, if I dropped $4k on parts at one shop and was paying cash they'd knock a percentage off.

Again, I'm not looking to get back my $300 on these injectors. But I'm not going to let them go for $35 with FREE SHIPPING either.

So, what would you do?

Would never sell it that cheap, no.

If that's the absolute best price you're going to get for it, I'd just give them to someone you know that's equally enthusiastic as you for free. You know they'd put it to good use, and you've had your fun anyway.

If however you feel holding out a bit longer may get you a better price from someone, or you don't know anyone worthy, then just wait. Maybe put up some ads on craigslist.

That's the problem with after market high performance parts, and/or custom cars...you never ever ever get anything near their "worth" or at least what you paid for them...
...unless...you save them in good condition and preferably in-the-box for about 30 or 40 years.
There are guys who will pay big bucks for an '70's Edelbrock manifold for instance, or a Holly 4-barrel.

I don't know...I guess I'd search eBay and find out the going rate for the exact same thing, and if they are selling at auction for a reasonable price...do that..
If there are ten of them with a buy-it-now, and they don't seem to be selling....hang on to them for a while longer.

u have to svck it up, when you need to sell something people WILL buy it for pathetic amounts of cash, when people need something from you you can ask for their first born and they will gladly pay...

just get rid of everything... even cheap, that way you can forget about it and move on....

hes selling it because it's not a child friendly car, not because he can't afford to keep it. if someone offered me an 1/8th of what i was asking for then i would even respond to them.
