Wild Wasteland?

Post » Sat Jan 22, 2011 9:40 am

Yo,

I'm all for playing through and just having a good time, but I don't have hundreds of hours to REALLY enjoy NV. So, given that you have one chance to take Wild Wasteland and you lose out on other potentially fun traits by taking it, can anyone elaborate on what exactly this adds to the game experience? I've played pretty linearly through to the recon mission to Nikon(sp?) where the legion lotteried the powder gangers and I haven't seen anything that struck me as particularly "wild."

Pretty soon I will be too far gone to restart, need some guidance on whether to redo or not.

Thoughts?

It really isn't that Wild, there are few actual Wild Wasteland encounters and they are in set places. And just to let you know when you encounter a Wacky Wasteland event a confused vault boy will be in the left corner and you will here an alien kind of music.

Are you on the PC? Do you have any issues against using console commands? If not, then just add it to your character and go along your merry way.

That being said, it adds about a dozen random encounters/oddities all throughout the wasteland. It is also supposed to modify some dialogue, to throw in more humor, but I cannot confirm that as I have nothing to compare it against (am still on my 1st playthrough with WW turned on). That, and there's 2 unique weapons that are only available if you take the trait. On the flip side, there's a different unique weapon that you can obtain if you DO NOT take it as well.

I'm interested in adding this as a third trait (seems pointless to waste a trait slot). What would the command be from the console? (new to the PC, usually x360)

Firstly you need to know that there are no random encounters in FNV. I assumed there were and that Wild Wasteland would change some of those but that isnt the case. Wild Wasteland simply alters some existing content in fixed places into more "wacky" stuff.

To add Wild Wasteland to your character you need to enter

player.addperk 000ED568

I have no idea what this will do if added to your character part way through the game though.

I am 20 hours in, and have had 3 WW encounters

Weapon
Spoiler
you get 3 holy frag gernades... They are nukes you throw... Just throw them very very far

kinda funny
Spoiler
At the docks near the radiated town there is an encampment of Legion. After I killed them all I was walking by the wall of a building, and there was graffite saying Romans go home in latin

dialog
Spoiler
Talking Rex my robot dog I had a conversation pop up where 'he told me someone was trapped in a well' I went to Jimmy's well, and found a named BB gun, and 200 pelets. Does not do much damage, but it crits almost every shot great for taking out limbs on Deathclaws ironicly

Honestly I am so glad I took it. It puts the quirky back into the game, and without the items I am sure I could not have survived some encounters.

I've found a fair few, but not all of them I can truthfully say that I understand. On the upshot, maybe when i see a film, something weird will remind of of New Vegas, and i will then understand the encounter?

I have understood most of them, and out of those, i have enjoyed most of those, so i would say it is worth it.

Let's see..the ones I have found so far that I remember (Should be obvious since this is the spoiler section, but just to be painfully clear...)

*SPOILERS*:

1) A fridge with a skeleton wearing a Fedora. (Think of the most recent Indiana Jones film, where the trope "Nuke the Fridge" comes from...)
2) Leaving the factory where one finds the..ahem..sixbot, 4 old ladies tried to mug me, each of them weilding rolling pins. (I think a Monty Python reference, they did do a sketch called "Hell's Granny's" if I recall right)
3) To the far north there's a UFO hovering near 3 aliens, the aliens are hostile. One of them does have an alien blaster and some ammo. If memory serves the aliens replace a "normal" encounter of 3 mercs, one with a unique gauss rifle.
4) The Latin Graffiti mentioned in another post (Another Monty Python reference, From "Life of Brian")
5) The conversation with Rex where he mentions Jimmy fell down a well, again mentioned in another post. (Reference to the old Lassie TV show I assume, where Lassie would come to town trying to bark and explain that Timmy fell down the well or some other disaster).
6) Found in Nipton, two chared corpses named Owen & Beru (From Star Wars. Luke Skywalker's uncle and aunt)

I may have seen one or two more, those stuck out in my head though.

The 4 old ladies trying to mug me was funny!!!!

Yea, i took the wild wasteland trait. It only changes i believe 15 encounters so it doesn;t change the game all that much. (it spells them out on the last page of the strategy guide if you pick it up) I am glad i took it tho because i hated all the other choices. All the other traits seemed to give bonuses to something but in exchanged gave you a handicap to something else. I'm sure during the game i would appreciste the bonis but i would have been really pissed at those times when the handicapped talent worked against me. that was the main reason i took it. Didn't want to handicap any of my skills.

Yeah, there are actually several Monty python references, but those ones are fairly simple. Some are harder to place.
Like the dead cannibal outside of goodsprings, sat on a ridge with cards, bowling balls and a fridge full of human meat, half a corpse in the ditch behind him...... That one confused me,
Also, things like entering a cave with a few spatulas on the floor, and the wild wasteland icon popped up, that one made no sense to me.... Any ideas?

Here, I found this article on Vault (The Fallout Wiki): http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Wild_Wasteland

Seems to explain most or all of them. After I couple edits I remembered six I've seen personally as you can see, so I've seen a bit over a third of them based on that list.

Theres something in the Ultra Luxe too...when youre trying to find a beef wranglers son.

When you come across a body thats part of the quest, the wacky vault boy pops up and I cant understand why...

I then promptly die because I've neglected getting enough sneak to bring hidden weapons into the hotel and my bare knuckle combat is still where it was when I started the game...

It's really not game breaking nor has a huge impact on the NV experience, but it's a must for the Alien Blaster, arguably the most powerful & safe weapon in the game.

Wild Wasteland adds some in-jokes to the game that usually don't destroy your experience unless you're a diehard serious gamer. They also don't destroy your chances of finding everything because the things it does add are either equal to what they replace or they don't replace anything.

Spoiler
Example: in one area, it adds 4 Holy Hand Grenades, which act like handheld Mini-Nukes. In a non-WW game you'd just find Mini-Nukes.

I used WW in the first playthru. It was cute stuff, should be seen at least once. But after that I prefer having the unique gauss rifle instead.

Isn't that what the console command "add.item" is for?

I encountered the three aliens and the only one that was hostile was the Captain. I killed him took the alien blaster and ammo but left the other two alive.

I find the the YCS not that much better than the regular Gauss justifying not having the Alien Blaster in the game, but that is a matter of taste, I suppose
