Will I be able to get Boone back?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:40 am

Hey everyone! Just want to make sure I'll be able to get Boone back if I dismiss him for awhile to do some quests with Veronica. Boone and I have been through a lot together - Vault 34, his quests, Quarry Junction, etc. He's become quite the bad mutha, I don't want to lose him for the tough battles to come. If I dismiss him, will I find him at his room at the Novac hotel later? Thanks!

Beware, he can be killed once you sent him home. I released him at the 188 to pick up Veronica, then followed him to the area where there are a ton of giant ants, they began attacking him and eventually killed him. Even as I attempted to help. So I had to reload to a later save to be able to obtain him later.

I haven't done it but I'm guessing the safest thing to do is to travel to Novac and then party company. That way he won't have to travel alone to get there. Then he should be there later when you want to travel with him again.

You can dismiss any companion and they will be happy to join you again later.

Just don't dismiss them near dangerous stuff that can kill them, like in Superd's post above. Dismiss them in front of a bunch of deathclaws, and surprise, the deathclaws will kill them. Once they are "offstage" (out of your current area) they should always get home safely.

That's what I always do when I part away with companion. I am so afraid to lose them, so always travel to their location and leave them there. :)

Edit:
The sweetest thing is that Boone, when dismissed, returns to his duties protecting Novac. He is in the T-rex's mouth after 9 pm :)

Yes they can be killed even when not in hardcoe mode when you part ways.

I either FT them home/Strip North Gate, or FT right after I dismiss them.

I am fairly sure that this game engine does not simulate NPC interaction (combat) when the player is not close enough to hear or see it (i.e. not in the same "cell"). Therefore, once any companion is sent home and is no longer in the same cell as you, they are effectively immortal since no combat will happen. However, while they are in the same cell as you, of course combat can happen. If you fast travel away from them immediately after dismissing them, they should be fine.
