Will all Dungeons be Unique?

Post » Sun Jul 17, 2011 10:31 pm

There was only one designer for the caves, dungeons etc. in Oblivion. I know that they have said dungeons are more complex and some greater in length than others, but will every dungeon from the list of 130 or so be unique? Is there any information that has been released to fans which I don't know of?

EDIT - I posted this in wrong forum sorry

I don't know considering they have over 150 (?) dungeons, but it would be awesome if all were unique.

Yes, Todd has confirmed that every dungeon will be unique. They've upped the number of designers from one to eight, ensuring much more detailed dungeons. Some will range from a few minutes to a couple hours to complete.

Yes.

It has been confirmed by Todd the man himself. Question is, what's their definition of unique. That is all.

I expect there to be some sameness between dungeons to provide us a common sense of Skyrim. I do not think every dungeon will be so unique as to feel completely alien from the others, as Shivering Isles does with Cyrodil in the game of Oblivion.

Yes, just like RAGE the whole world has been hand crafted. I believe these two games are the first of their kind in that respect. I really can't wait to take a look around all though I won't lie the knowledge that they are hand drawn will only tempt me to search for repeated patterns lol. probably only along the ground or large rock faces and buildings :)

No matter how "hand crafted" the world is assets are going to be reused...a lot. It's just not practical to a have all unique assets everywhere.

It would be logical to assume that the arcitecture of dungeons will be similar eg all dwemer ruins will have the same arcitecture because one culture won't only design things one way only once, they repeat their designs.
The Falmer ruins (if there are any) will all in architecture be similar to each other but vastly different from Dwemer. The same rules I think will apply to Ayleid, ancient Nord ruins etc.

I think it will be that the traps and puzzles in the dungeons will be unique from the others, with only slight variations in the actual design of the dungeon

This is simply my opinion so I could be right, I could be wrong

Well, we can't know for sure, and to really be able to give you an best guess I'd need to know what you mean by "unique". I mean of course there won't be two dungeons that are exactly alike, there were none exactly alike in Morrowind or Oblivion either. It's yet to be seen how easily distinguishable dungeons are for one another. I'll tell you what I do know.

They have 8 dungeon designers instead of 1 now, so they are able to put a lot more detail and probably length into them.

They have 5 or 6 main tilesets, but each tileset has a lot of variation therein. Here are the ones I can assure you will be in.

1. Caves (subsets will probably include mines and may include ice caves)
2. Ice caves (assuming they're not a subset of caves)
3. Nordic ruins
4. Dwemer ruins
5. Forts (May be divided into Nord and Imperial (yet to be seen))

The latest dungeon count officially given is "over 150". They have stated that the team are continuing to build more dungeons right up until release. Also, if reports of the full demo are anything to go by, some dungeons will go through multiple tilesets, like a Nordic ruin intersecting a natural cave.

And hopefully the odd Ayleid ruin along the border with Cyrodil and maybe some Falmer Ruins in remote locations.

In any case, think about the variety we got with FO3. That's the sort of stuff we're going to be seeing, perhaps even a bit better.

I doubt it will be right up until release because they will have to stop adding content at somepoint and test the game as a finished product, although hopefully they will add content until the latest possible moment.

Which my guess would be end of september

I'm sure they don't literally mean they will still be building them after the game has started shipping or anything. All it would mean is that they'll continue to build (and subsequently test and perfect) dungeons for as long as they can until they have to finalise testing and complete the game.
