Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:36 pm

Not quite I guess, but there's surely room for improvement with better textures, shaders, etc.

Look at the differences between modded Fallout3/NV/Oblivion and the unmodded games.

Absolutely. There is nothing that impressive in that video, not even by Cryengine's standards. Those pine trees and grass aren't that special, just slightly higher in quality. You could up the poly count on any Skyrim rock, apply some better textures and match them there.

Maybe the water and lighting is a little better than what Skyrim could accomplish, but that video did not showcase the best lighting I have seen from that engine, and the swimming wasn't that convincing.

Your framerate would probably svck, though.

Lol, have you guys seen the textures in Skyrim? :P the graphics in that video is 12002 times better, but fortunately Skyrim is 2139143149394 times more enjoyable than any other game ever made :P probably why it's the most played game on Steam ever. yaaay, more money for the next masterpiece :D

I'm honestly kinda wondering why it doesn't look closer to that in the first place, what with all the hype BGS/Todd kept throwing out about how amazing the world would look. It's pretty nice, but not amazing. Not in my opinion. Too many issues like bad mipmapping and the shadows. It will be way better though once the mods start rolling out.

This game looks like the way it looks on 6 year old hardware, that's incredible, imagine if xbox and ps3 were never invented, and the game was optimized for current hardware, lol, it would be too scary to play.

If the Xbox and PS3 were never invented, then the PS2 would still be reigning as the supreme ruler. And, more than likely, we'd have games built on 10 year old hardware. If consoles were never invented, then no one can say what would happen due to the fact that it all happened at a blistering rate in the 70s with consoles themselves being replaced every year or so as well as the computers. One just cannot predict it.

I think you answered your own question. "Hype." Teehee. ;)

And to the OP....if you want to be able to run the game without stuttering all over the place, I doubt Skyrim will ever look like that. There will be mods, I'm sure, that will improve distant textures and other textures, as well as improve water (altho imo the surface water looks pretty decent already). The extra load (good) hi-res texture mods tend to put on your rig, however, combined with this engine, means you better have a pretty awesome PC to use them. :)

If a mod came out like that, that would be great. I have a killer rig and want to make the most out of it.

it is possible to make games even with better quality than those. check out the demo's by nvidia and so on, it shows the power some of the best graph cards out there. problem is that you cant build a game on graphics alone, it wont be good marketing if only people with killer rigs can play such games and also how they have to make it work on dam console's

Well problem here is that nobody want to admit reality!, Skyrim will never look that good!, and this is 100% true!. Moreover wen its comes to high graphics nobody are interested in consoles!...

That video was also rendered, no hardware config today could run that at 30 - 60 fps in real time. Except maybe a quad SLI setup. hah

Because there would have been no PS4 or Xbox 720 to run it ;)
I don't even think this is runnable in real time in a recent pc, as said before...

Maybe we'll see something like that in Elder's Scroll 7/8, but not for now ^^

Regardless of the example video you want to use, the answer is yes. Eventually.

I hope at least one of the people who decides to up the graphics in Skyrim will manage to keep the original art style at the same time.

The video wasn't too impressive.. Half the time the camera was moving too quickly to really investigate the quality of the textures, and the motion blur made things seem pretty. If you got in close with the camera, I'm sure you could point out a lot of issues.

That said, modders can and will improve this game severely. Once I saw the part of the video where he dove in the water, I thought "Man, I can't wait til modders clean up Skyrim's waters!"

If what the mod scene for GTA is doing is any indication, then....

With what has been done with Morrowind, eventually Oblivion will be way better looking then Skyrim, and Skyrim will end up better looking then that video.

One of the guys that works on that (Boris Vorontsov, ENB mod) is already working on stuff for Skyrim. Page http://enbdev.com/index_en.html.

I've seen modded Morrowind look better than Skyrim does now. Part of that is just taste, idk, Skyrim still has some of Oblivion's cartoony aspects that really detract from the look for me. All that Bloom.

still, we are stuck with a mediocre engine to work here... this aint crytek or unreal, its somekind of gamebryo bethesda miscarriage id say
to make that thing look pretty on somin you could buy under 10grand and wont need to cool with liquid N2O youd need to rewrite half that engine... not just improve shaders, how that went weve seen in FO3 and NV with those shader mods that made it a lil itsy bit prettier but kinda unplayable
the problems start with it being a DX9 engine and not supporting 10 or even 11 which would be needed to utilize the power of modern video cards to make it look pretty and not strain the cpu even more to do so, i kinda doubt that injecting the dx10 stuff into the engine wont be that easy if doable at all

actually Todd did say in interviews that graphics wise Skyrim would not be a big jump like Morrowind to Oblivion.

And Todd also said: "The PC version looks and runs great. If you have a high-end PC, it’s gonna melt your face."

One of these things is not like Skyrim
One of these things is completely wrong
Can you tell which of these things is not like Skyrim
By the time I finish this song?

There's an easy solution to that: design the game as a PC exclusive and simply let the consoles die n_n And if you feel generous you can port it over (as an afterthought) a few years later once their technology has caught up (if karma or any other cosmic justice had any say in this it would do the same anyway ^^)

Just joking. But really I don't understand. Why can't they just design the game for PC and then downgrade things from there until it can run on consoles? I'm not a programming expert or anything just using my common sense and it's telling me It can't be that hard, right?
