will skyrim freeze more often with more mods? (like FoNV?)

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 8:55 am

Hey guys,
finally getting skyrim for pc in december and i was wandering.

i currently have fallout new vegas and i have like 9? 10? mods installed on it? and it crashes quite frequently.

I was thinking, if i started to install more than 9 mods on skyrim, will it also crash frequently like fallout?

Are crashes common with skyrim?

I dont think its something wrong with my pc because its an ok build imo

gtx 660ti
intel core i5 2500k
8GB ram
64GB SSD
1TB HDD

forgot to ask too:
will putting skyrim change how fast the game will render details from a distance? will it load faster? etc?

thanks guys

Depends entirely on the mods you're installing.

You can have quite a few mods installed and still have a stable game, if they're all compatible and well made.

FO:NV shouldn't be crashing that often with only 9-10 mods, I run it with way more than that and my PC's not as good as yours. It'll be something to do with your load order, or incompatible mods. It's not what you'd expect anyway.
That's slightly off topic, but you'll have the same issues with skyrim if you don't manage your mods carefully. Skyrim can run just fine with hundreds of mods, and crash fewer than once every few hours (so I guess it depends on your definition of "frequently"), but the important thing to know is that it will require a lot of management. Never add things without checking that they'll be compatible. Use BOSS, Bash, and something else alliterative, and you'll be fine. Hopefully your time with modded Skyrim will be better than with modded FO:NV !

Yup, depends on the mods.

With not a single mod installed (Except my own WIP) I've had Skyrim crash on me maybe, like, 3-5 times since launch in November. So on it's own, unmodded, it actually seems fairly stable to me. (Despite what some people will shout angrily :P)

However, adding mods into the mix can easily stir things up. If you add clean mods that work well together, you can have many many mods (Even 50-100+) loaded before you get any kinds of issues. However, just a few scrapy, iffy, poorly made mods can bring your game to its knees and break just about everything very quickly.

My game tends to get more crashy with the sorts of mods that add new actors, particularly outdoors. While ASIS seems to work fine for me if I don't get ridiculous with the settings, I can't use mods like War Zones or mods that add travelers to the roads without destabilizing my game.

I've been playing with over 200 mods for months (probably over 300 if you count textures, etc). The only time I have problems are after a patch (rarely) or if I mess with the mod setup too much.

The general rules are:
  • Carefully choose your mods, the more mods you use, the more careful you have to be
  • If you're going to use a lot of mods, like &--#62; 100, then you should probably put together a mod setup for a character and not change it until you start a new character
  • Don't even try unless you're willing to be patient and put time into setup and bug tracking
  • Avoid mods that weren't created with the CK.
  • Use BOSS.
  • Use Wrye Bash.

If you follow these rules and use common sense, you can run a lot of mods in a stable setup. But you're going to have to carefully go through the READMEs on every mod.

Fantastic advice.

Also, unless you are following something like S.T.E.P it pays to only install a few mods at a time. I've had times where I've had to go about a month back and uninstall every mod that I installed in that period because one/some of them was breaking my game (I would get guaranteed CTD's whenever the player or NPC's were casting certain magic effects).

In short you have to have a fairly intimate relationship with your modded skyrim.

Yes. The more mods you install, the greater probability you install a poorly programmed one, and the greater probability you get bad conflicts!
