I tend to change my avatar based on whatever I'm obsessed with at the time, Serial Experiments Lain being my latest obsession. Typically, I stick to dark and "artsy" anime-themed avatars. I've tried comedic avatars in the past, but I'd quickly change them to something else. As for my signature, it reflects my mood (which, admittedly, is almost never good) and is often a reference as well.
