Win7 x64 .dds thumbnail viewer?

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 2:06 am

Anyone found a good one? Seems like Win7 x64 is very buggy with thumbnails, at least it has been for me since i installed it a year ago. Often thumbnails refuses to be refreshed and just turns into icons. Sometimes a few are icons and a few becomes thumbnails.

Mystic Thumbs worked great for about 2 months, but recently ALL .dds thumbnails turned into icons, reinstalling Mystic Thumbs doesnt help, restarting explorer or deleting the thumbnails cache doesnt help either. This makes modding quite difficult or at least a lot more cumbersome than it was on x86 which i used for over a year without problem, never a problem in Vista either.

Maybe someone found a better .dds thumbnail viewer that works for x64 and is more reliable?

It's still working for me, it sounds like an old problem that goes back to windows 95 where the icon cache would get all the icons mixed up,
mp3 files looked like document files, jpg had winamp icon etc

You may want to try rebuilding your icons. As stated, this is an old problem. I got it regularly on many different physical machines running many different versions of Windows. I can't recall offhand how to rebuild the icons, though, since it's been a while since I had to do it and the fact that I haven't used Windows regularly for around 2 years now.

I think to rebuild icons, all you do is delete the thumbnails cache, which Mystic Thumbs has a built-in option to do. I've tried it hundreds of times the latest year and it has never worked for solving this problem.

Not sure what you mean by that, but this should help you rebuild icons http://xenomorph.net/windows/vista/force-vista-to-rebuild-icons/

And another one: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

As I said, it's been a while so I'm unsure which one is more accurate here.

I've tried Sagethumbs several times, just like MysticThumbs (which i find slightly more reliable) it only works for a little while, and many of the thumbs still turns to icons for me.

Ethatron: thank you! that actually worked for me (so far), wasnt too expensive either so i might end up buying it.

deaths_soul: Deleting the thumbs cache forces windows to rebuild all thumbs again, so it doesnt need any programs, windows even has a built-in function for it. But it's not the problem i've been having.

Sorry, I got a bit confused there. Now that I think about it, things are making even less sense than they did before. And I don't even know why I went down that road. I blame my 10 work session today. >_>
