Ok so heres my problem, I want a house in windhelm, I can't buy it until I do the butcher quest, it woby activate ive tried evrything help!!!!!!

How many times have you been in Windhelm? (And by that, I mean have you left/returned since arriving?)

Did you complete the DB quest Mourning Never Comes?

What platform are you on? Do you have the latest official patch? If you're on PC, do you have any of the Unofficial Patches?


This quest is very tricky to get started. You have to arrive in and leave Windhelm (even if it's just outside to the stables) at least once. Also, in a game without the Unofficial Patch, the DB quest sometimes conflicts with it.

Also, just so you're aware, you're going to either have to do part of, or complete, the Civil War quests in order to purchase that house, depending on which side you choose.

ok im with the stormcloaks (completed), PS3 version, latest patch, dont think ive completed mourning never comes, ive been too and from windhelm about 15 times and still no luck, also ive been inside the house without starting the quest found the key, got the amulet havent managed to get it to necromancer, it wouldnt let me investigate anything also.

oh and i thing tova shatter-shield is dead, thats where i found the key

You'll also need to enter the city (not just be in, but enter, via gate, fast travel, whatever) between 7pm and 7am. Then make your way to the cemetary area to find the guard who will give you the quest.
