Windows Media Pony Help

Okay. I have Windows Media Player and just learned today it is outdated.. It wont run MP4 files (I had convert my MP4 files into Avi Files which made them way bigger)

So I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find the newest version of Windows Media Player and if they can tell me what the size of the download is. Thank you for listening. Peace.

According to the Microsoft site:

The MPEG-4 file format, as defined by the MPEG-4 specification, contains MPEG-4 encoded video and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)-encoded audio content. It typically uses the .mp4 extension. Windows Media Player does not support the playback of the .mp4 file format. You can play back .mp4 media files in Windows Media Player when you install DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs. DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs include the Ligos LSX-MPEG Player and the EnvivioTV.

Try a different video player.

You can upgrade Windows Media Player to your heart's content and you'll never be able to play MP4 container files. WMP doesn't have support for it and probably never will.

If you want .MP4 support for WMP, you'll need to install a codec pack.

My friend told me there is a WMP that plays MP4. But I didn't manage to catch what he said. It might've been a codec pack or something then. I'll need to try to get hold of him again about it.

Yeah, mine plays them too, but you need a third-party codec not supported or offered by Microsoft.

Try installing this: http://www.cccp-project.net/

Try as you might, you will always find flaws with WMP

To repeat: use a different media player.

My recommendations:
  • iTunes for music (I guess its a bit chunky, but I like it...)
  • VideoLAN for videos and such.
EDIT: I personally like them and would recommend them, but not strongly
EDIT: Haha, just ignore this post... (I still personally use both media players, though.)

I like WMP. This is the only time I actually had a problem with it. If I can't fix this then I don't mind. I can convert my files to avi, I guess.

Are you sincerely making those recommendations? Those are probably the worst recommendations for default multimedia players. VLC is an ok fallback player since it can play most anything, but on any given releases there are known problems with various codecs as far as artifacting of broken features of the container / Codec are concerned. There are muck better video players. Also while ITunes on OS X may be decent, it is a sluggish, crash-prone memory hog on windows (I swear apple releases it broken on windows in order to convince people with IPhones to switch to OS X).

Definitely don't do that! Not only is it time-consuming, but it'll also slash the video quality

I guess I don't know that much about them... But, I do personally like them, and would recommend them, but I guess not strongly

I mean, I think iTunes is alright: It does what I want, and it doesn't really interfere with anything. And, so far, VLC has done everything I've needed it to do, although (but this might have just been me) the last time I tried its file conversion tool it didn't do anything, :S

Anyway, rephrase: I recommend these media players, but not strongly.

Vlc player basically plays everything, latest version is even better, media player even the latest version is out of date, microsoft should get with the current trends in technology and update it to accept more codecs.

Nooooo not itunes! Fair enough if you like it, but DEFRON has said it below why I hate it so much:

Also while ITunes on OS X may be decent, it is a sluggish, crash-prone memory hog on windows (I swear apple releases it broken on windows in order to convince people with IPhones to switch to OS X).

My itunes crashes every single time I load it WITHOUT FAIL, no matter how many updates I download for it. I find myself willing it through the simplest of processes. My ipod is on its last legs I fear, and when it finally packs up I'm getting an ordinary mp3 player, to hell with itunes and ipods. Needless to say, I won't touch Apple with a ten foot barge-pole ever again. They don't care, because they make too much money releasing an i-something every six months. (Yeah I know no-one else cares either, but my other tech doesn't break as often as Apple stuff does.) /rant.

tl;dr: I cannot ever recommend something as crash-y and infuriating as itunes.

Using the default codecs it's much better than VLC and MPC-HC.

What makes it better?
It's more customizable than both those players and the built-in codecs are better.

AND BECAUSE I SAY SO.

Windows Media Player has more codecs for it than pretty much any other player out there. It's the reason that mplayer has support for Windows codecs. You don't know what you're talking about if you think otherwise. The difference between VLC and Windows Media Player is VLC uses internal codecs whereas WMP accepts external codecs. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages, but a major disadvantage of internal codecs is you have to wait for new releases upstream before you get new codec support/fixes/features. It's also the reason why VLC still lacks support for some of the more advanced features for various codecs and containers.

Oh, yeah, I think I feel the same way about Apple. The only reason I was introduced to iTunes was because I got one of the first generation iPod Nanos back when. Needless to say, I have gladly not purchased one single Apple product since then (besides this scary moment where I almost but a mac computer).

Interesting about this crashing with iTunes I'm seeing... iTunes has never crashed for me, :S. Well, actually, I am now remembering the more than rare, but not common frustration with iTunes and iPod crashes and freezes.

I found it really funny that they already have an "iPad 3" out.

I wish I was that lucky. I'm constantly being bothered to fix issues with iTunes. In fact, one time it was so bad I had to factory deault a laptop to get itunes to work (wouldn't play any music, spent a couple of weeks trying to get it to work) Somehow the permissions for the files got really screwed up. Another time somehow compatibility mode got enabled for iTunes, still don't know how. I spent a good couple of hours trying to get that to work before I realized compatibility mode was enabled (thankfully someone else had a similar problem and I found it through a google search).

Basically nowadays I refuse to help people with itunes issues.
