i wonder how Skyrim will be viewed 5 years from now

Post » Thu Nov 01, 2012 10:45 pm

Its a funny thing what time does to certain games. I remember all the hate Oblivion used to get when it was the new thing out. Now, Its Skyrim and most post are criticizing the game. Now, when i drop in to see the threads on Oblivion there are several ones about "returning to Oblivion and its like the best game ever made" lol. I don't know for sure but i wonder if this has something to do with our minds reliving our past through the eyes of the game. I know when i play old games back when i had a more successful life it brings back happy feelings from the past that has nothing to do with video games, its just the games tend to bring back certain memories for some reason. Kinda like a certain songs or smells.

At any rate, i never thought Oblivion would have saved a place in peoples hearts like Morrowind did. Even though its not at that same level, its close. Thus, i wonder in 5-7 years after Elder Scrolls VI comes out how people will feel about Skyrim. Thoughts?

The perpetually discontent will move on to lambasting the next game, and those who actually enjoy this one will be free to do so in peace and not be implicitly insulted for it.

i agree, its one of few games that i can put down for a month, then go right back to it and dump another 100 hours in it, then rinse and repeat. I'm getting that burned out feeling again so i might go and buy FO3, FO:NV and Oblivion again tomorrow and start have a system where i play one character in each. Dam Bethesda has gotten me so addicted to their freaking games. I used to love online games now it feels like a chore to play them idk why lol.

TES 6 will come out.

"Skyrim was so much better"

TES 7 will come out

"TES 6 was so much better"

The cycle always continues...

Depending on how the next game is, I wasn't super excited about Skyrim, except I was hoping for werebears, but was let down. I think the next game will be better than Skyrim, as long as they don't "dumb down" the game anymore. I still think Skyrim will be my least favorite.

If the only thing you were excited about was Werebears, yeah, I bet you'll never learn to like Skyrim.

What's sad is this happens with every video game series, not just TES.

The forums will become a polite and friendly environment, if Oblivion is anything to go by. Those who are dissatisfied with the game/aren't long-term fans of the Elder Scrolls series will move on, and those of us who found something really special in Skyrim will continue to play - sustained by our imaginations, and many years worth of mods.

In short, I can't wait.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and it seems people learn how to deal with the game's imperfections and embrace the positives as time goes on. Skyrim has many.. some people will just need some time to look back on it to realize it.

I'll feel how the Morrowinders do now. Should be fun being the wise old man yelling at the little things.

Pretty much this. Life goes on.

Though personally, Oblivion's still the worst TES title in the series.

I may be biased because Oblivion was my 1st TES game, but Oblivion is certainly not the worst. My vote goes to the TES travels games on that front.

The new game will come out, people will [censored] and say Skyrim was ten times better in every way and profess their undying love of it.
Though they'll never let Morrowind go, they'll be harping on their grandchildren as they play TES: XIII.

Oblivion is still pretty widely hated by RPG fans, even though I personally like it for what it is. Skyrim may have dulled the criticism of Oblivion a bit, but it hasn't magically converted it into an RPG fan favourite as you seem to be implying.

I like RPG's. I like Skyrim and Oblivion. I hate action games.

Hmm.

In five years? Well, if it's anywhere near the Hype Period for the next game or so, there's an identifiable pattern...
Some will pan it and call Skyrim an atrocity to the series, just like Oblivion before it. Then when the new game arrives, the very same people who ragged on Skyrim will go back to praising it in lieu of the new game, because people NEED to complain.
