All the dwarves "Disappeared" from the face of the earth all at once, due to.... Uh... Well it involved some tools... and uh... maybe astral projection. And now they are gone.

Translation: Todd Howard wants us to find this mysterious, so one day we can have Elder Scrolls X: Dwemergetton, the return of the dwarves, the celebrity voice actor will be John Rhys Davis

Like others have said, they went mostly extinct. You can meet the last (barely) living one that we know of in Morrowind.

Also, they aren't actually Dwarves, they're elves, called Dwemer. There's an explanation for why they're called Dwarves, but I don't remember what it is. You can find it on the net somewhere if you're really interested.

No, but the evidence of their existence and their artifacts/armor are still abundant.

Dwemer, or dwarves, were one of the oldest races, and were a type of elves. They were actually as large as elves and humans, but they were dwarves compared to giants.

They're all extinct, now. Their race was wiped out, and now all that's left are ruins, equipment, and hostile constructs of war.

Instead, there's a race of large, burly, hairy, stereotypical drunkards.

Fun Fact:

In Norse mythology, dwarves are actually a type of elf. Although they are called Dvergr (Dwarf), they are also called Svartalfar (black elves).

So having the Dwemer as an elf race is not terribly original, not that it needs to be.

"Dwarves" were the Dwemer (Deep Elves), elves who had characteristics of typical dwarves. They mostly lived underground, they had advanced technology, and they had giant beards but otherwise they resembled elves.

They were called dwarves by the giants who encountered them in Morrowind, so the name stayed in use throughout the Empire.

Several hundred years ago they crafted three artifacts in an attempt to tap into the heart of a god to achieve divine powers. Something went wrong and their entire race vanished from the world.

History lesson over.
