I may regret this but...

switching the modem to bridged mode usually greatly improves stability (note: you need a router to do this)

So, if your mom doesn't use the 'puter that often What's actually stopping you from replacing it? She probably doesn't even know it's there.

That thing is old, are you sure it's not part type writer too?

but seriously you might want to save up money for a labtop or something.

Just tell your mother there are problems with it. I told my mother our modem was crap. Hell, if you tried using it at anytime in the morning, it'd disconnect like every 5 minutes. It was a pain since I'd get up at 6:30 and try to level up in World at War until 8 o clock. Even in the afternoons it'd disconnect maybe 2 or 3 times. When I mentioned it it got replaced in about a week.

Ahh, just making sure. I'm trying to get a proper image for when I visually imagine this situation. Carry on.

If it is hardwired, are you sure it's not just a dodgy cable rather than a problem with the modem?

Have you tried to reset it?

And yes, if you were to replace it you'd most definitely need your mom's account info to get them to send a new one out. Perhaps you could convince your mom to place the service call?

How much would a new modem cost anyway? See if you can get one for free because if it is free your mother can't use cost as an excuse to not get one.
