World of Warcraft getting DX11 before C2?

Post » Fri Apr 22, 2011 1:19 pm

Don't get me wrong, I am a textbook Crytek fanboy and I have faith they'll give us DX11 when it's ready and when that time comes, Crysis 2 will set a new benchmark. But I just read some WoW patch notes that almost made me spit out my drink, and I'm still chuckling over it:

http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/2244-Patch-4.1-PTR-Notes-April-8th-Update-Patch-4.1-PTR-Build-13850

Visual Settings Updates

* Removed the red bar preventing the overall graphics slider from going to ultra based on computer specs.
* When the user moves the overall slider to a setting that would have previously been prevented, any option that can't go as high as that setting will get the warning icon with a tooltip explaining why it can't go higher. For example: The user sets the overall slider to Ultra and the water setting can only go to Fair. The water setting would automatically switch to Fair.
* Support for DirectX 11 can now be found in the Advanced tab of the Options screen.

I just thought this was funny and decided to share. Granted, WoW DX11 will probably still look relatively gross and outdated like it already does in its DX9 format...

WoW has been supporting dx11 for a while, since the mid WoTLK actualy (around year and a half ago), but you could only set it through the config file, now its just being added to the game preferences within the game.

That's interesting, I had no idea. Are there any real differences?

It adds sunshafts, nice light dispersion effects when theres something in front of the sun and full water reflections. The water effects in WoW with dx11 on are actualy one of the best I've ever seen, which looks kind of bizzare compared to the rest, textures especialy.

^this.

Wow was released so many moons ago, long before windows vista and dx11 were out. Games being reased today generally have an option to choose between 9 and 11. But, in saying this, I'm not fussed with the way the graphics are with dx 9 for C2. It's still a beautiful game and has no comparison to World of Warcraft

+1 to you Ace

The fact that WoW gets DX11 is irrelevant

only thing that's relevant here is the fact that Crytek didn't bother working extra on this title for before release for PC and just did a quick port and started working on stuff first after release. Gaming business these days svcks. Even though all our complaints are valid it will end with PC getting shafted big time because of constant complains.

Crytek and every other developer really should take a look at CDproject and Piranha bytes who develop games properly for pc while also creating good ports for consoles. I don't really get it, what everyone should do is create PC games and port them to consoles not the other way around.

Which would people have preferred? Waiting another 4-6 months for Crysis 2 to be released on PC after the console versions but with DX11/Higher res textures? Or play it now in its current state which I find more than acceptable. People are biching about this game for very weak reasons. The MP is fun and polished, the graphics are amazing for DX9 and the single player is pretty good too. Give it some time and the PC version might get a DX11 improvement, but even if it doesn't, it's still worth the price of purchase.

i would have preferred them working on a proper PC version on the side instead of a last minute port.

I definitely would have preferred to wait. I also would have preferred them to make it as a PC exclusive and not have to wait. Or even have made it in higher-res textures and higher poly models and THEN optimized it for the consoles, and not had to wait. I guess we don't always get what we want... or what would make sense...

So many posters here have no idea of basic economics. If it costs a company millions of dollars to make a game that is portable between PC, XB360 and PS3, how much more do you think it would cost to make the game twice, or 3 times over, separately for each platform.
Developers these days create one code base, usually using a common code path/graphic pipeline, and then customize that for each platform. This is why a lot of PC games these days are "console" ports. On top of that, publishers prefer to release games simultaneously for all platforms, in order to capitalize on the fact that the games are new and fresh.
Until PC game releases become more profitable for a game developer than console games are, this will be the economic reality of games development. Crying about it isn't going to change the cold hard fact that games are written to make money.

on the other hand measures can be taken during development of the graphical options to streamline the changes between the version, and take less effort in showing noticeable differences between the version, I would think something that costs them slightly more, but earns them more from word of mouth is profitable, but maybe that's just me >.>

You sure it's been since middle Wrath ? I was pretty sure that it was at the pre-launch of Cata (Patch 4.01), and either you entered it in the config file or the command line -D3D11 option. It was listed in Dec 2010 has "experimental Direct3D 11 mode"

Either way, outside of the water and sunshafts, it doesn't seem to get much use. Though a chunk of folks did report a perofmance gain using it. I keep meaning to measure it. I believe currently if you don't have the -D3D11 command then it defaults to pure DX9 mode. Patch 4.1 is suppose to auto-detect, but also allow you to switch it.

The main reason to enable it is the large performance gains it gives if you have DX10/DX11 hardware. It improved my frame rates by about 30FPS. Plus it makes the water effects look better.

I would have preferred to wait even one more year for crysis 2 pc version that would be up to the bar.

without console netcode, without console menus, without console controls, without console gfx and whatnot..

but at the momeny ea and crytek shot themselves into foot and are now limbing around and waiting until someone stops their misery - thats how bad crysis 2 is

And WOW still looks like ass especially when compared to Crysis 2. I guess Crytek should have made their game to use DirectX 11 so it could look like WOW.....

Strange, there is quite a lot of folks who would say otherwise.
